A buddy of mine and myself bought a 92 Talon TSi AWD for $450 a couple of weekends ago. Since we have done lots of work to bring it to where it needs to be as far as maintenance goes, ect. Now we are starting to upgrade. We are wanting to run the car in the ESP class. Here are some thing we had in mind...

One of our factory alloys is bent and our tires do not match (not to mention they are nowhere near autocross quality) so we are looking at a set of Kosei K1 TS 17x7" wheels from Tire Rack and a set of Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec 225/45ZR17 tires. The Kosei rims are pretty lightweight at 14.1lbs each and are pretty affordable. The Star Spec tires seem to do quite well on my buddy's e30. Good decision? Are the 225's a good fit on a 7" wide rim? (keep in mind this car is going to be being thrown around cones) Will the tires stick out?

Our factory 1G turbo manifold is cracked (surprise) so we are looking at a ported 2G manifold? Does this sounds look a smart choice?

The exhaust is currently all factory. I'm currently looking at a lightly used Megan Racing set. (down pipe, test pipe, catback) $450 shipped. Does this sound like a good deal? Is the MR setup decent?

The suspension is all currently stock. We would like to get coilovers but as much as they cost they are a little out of range at the moment. When we are ready, any suggestions on which set to go with? Any suggestions on which rear sway bar to get?

We will be running approximately 15 pounds of boost. We cannot get a boost controller but we will have an aftermarket boost gauge as soon as we can get our hands on one. Is there any need to do the fuel pump rewire?

That's all I can currently think of. Any tips will be greatly appreciated! :talon:

I feel kinda left out at Auto X here, there's never any DSM's (except one evo). Build it and feel free to come roll with me :)

Ha, you aren't too far off. I go to Memphis every once in a while for the road course events. You should come check out the next one. It's in December I believe? Not sure. Any tips you can throw my way?

You will have to overcome the 1g AWD problem of stalling around sharp left turns.

I would run two pumps with a small fuel reservoir between them. Or, you can modify the gas tank. There are other solutions but i think the fuel reservoir is the most effective.

Haven't heard about that one. Are there any write-ups about it?

Just find a long sharp curve... go into it hard and try to accelerate out of it full throttle. The engine will shut off for about 1 1/2 seconds

Oh yeah... this only applies when you're below a 1/4 tank, and turning left. You can avoid it also by keeping the tank 1/2 full. But if you're trying to save weight...

I see. Thanks for the info!

I was going to do a coilover set up but price was way to much for me, so I went for the intrax springs (or whatever u want to run) and did a full polyurethane suspension kit and heim joint end links. So far it works awsome, the stuts are kyb agx (adjustable dampening). The ride is good and really responsive for a budget build. The only problem I have is overrunning the powersteering, so im trying to find a manual rack. The whole setup cost me about 800.00 and I did the labor. The best part is that you can do it in steps as money allows. Also I run 255/40r17 on stock evo 9 rims and they sit flush with the fenders, wo rub issues.

Sounds like a pretty nice setup. Thanks for the info. 255's with no rubbing at all?

I'd be interested in pics of this set-up. I have some Evo 9 wheels that I'll be using once my GSX is back in auto-x worthy condition, right now I have 225/45/17 Hoosiers mounted on them because I needed something I could run on my Civic Si while the GSX is down. But I was thinking 235 or 245 would be about the widest I could go on the Evo 9 wheels. My suspension set-up is similar to yours also, KYB AGX's with Eibach Sportlines.

No rubbing at all, front or rear with 255s. I am runnig 1/8th inch spacers on the rear just to even out the track width, its big time noticable with that wide of tire.;)

My buddy is gonna bring his digital cam over and I will post a few pics for you guys to check out. I can get you all the part numbers you need also for what im using.

Those rims are going to look so nice on the car..

$800?

Ground Control with Bilstein Sports will cost you that much.... That combo is a sure shot for autocrossing and the quality is top-notch.... If you have $200 more to spend, you can combine the GC's with Koni Yellows.

Megan makes a coilover setup for about $900

I think the recent shock dyno test results I read locally showed Penski's, Blistein's and Koni's as the top shock dyno performers.

However, if you're using intrax lower springs (which I have myself) eventually you will blow those AGX's. I did it on my s13 and KYB states specifically they aren't for use w/ lowering springs.

I'm not trying to knock your build by saying the above, I know it's a good combo, I've ran it, just be prepared down the road to have to replace those AGX's.

Second the agx's... I had them on a civic and they didn't last long at all WTF Spend the few extra bills to get koni's or a full coil setup.

I'm hoping to get my motor assembled next week, unforunately it's a little too late to hit any events :toobad:

I havent heared anything like that about the kyb's but thanks for the heads up. If they pop them I guess I'll try the bilsteins, its still a new set up on my car so I will see how it goes. Heres a couple of pics, and no they dont rub. The suspension wont flex that far...

Thanks for the tips and pics guys. I think the rims really will look good. We had to replace the CAS tonight but she's running again. This weekend we hope to get our boost leak tester together and to check that out. Today we ordered an Apexi downpipe (with cat delete) and the matching catback. That should give us a little more umph. The local PD won't like it but it's a track car, let it scream. We also ordered a boost gauge, a vent bezel to mount it in, along with some fluid for the transmission and diff. Not to mention the EGR blockoff plate to replace our coke can, haha.

Ranger, can you get a side shot? I've thought about picking up the enkei wheels, but i haven't seen a good picture with them on a 1g.

Here ya go, its with my old tires, but cant tell in picture. Taken on cell phone camera, I can try to get better one but it will be a few days.
