Hey, i just dropped my axleback section of my new japanimportshop 3" SS exhaust at a place that does powder coating to get the muffler powder coated gloss black.

The guys at the shop said that the muffler will get too hot, causing the powdercoat to flake off. They said this would happen at 400 degrees. I told them to do it anyway.

What do you guys think will happen?

I will be sure to put some pictures up when i get it back. The cat-back was only $165 shipped so i am pretty excited.

The reason i decided to get it powder coated is because i dont like the 4.5 inch tip. Too bling for me. Also, because the ebay exaust thread already clearly showed that it started to rust, and i dont want my muffler all rusty.

It looks like they raised the price a little, $225, ouch.

edit: heres a quick review of the exhaust...

Review Of The JapanImportShop 2G AWD 3" SS Exhaust

Thats what i told them, but they looked at me like i was retarded.:notgood:

Does anybody have this exhaust that can comment on its sound?

Its FULL 3" inside diameter piping, however inside the muffler in tapers to about 2.5, does anyone think that will make that much of a difference?

Im a perfectionist and i would like it to be FULL 3", but whatever.

Again, don't know why you would want to powder coat stainless steel exhaust... but lets just say you do want a black exhaust. If you want to go with a flat black look and know that the paint will hold, I know that many autoparts stores (AutoZone here in the Chitown area) sell ceramic coating "rattle-can" spray paint that holds up to 2,000 degrees.

I would at least scuff up the surface of what you are painting if going that path, but still don't see why you would want to. Personally, I used a gray spray paint of the 2,000 degree ceramic paint on my stock 1G J-pipe to combat rust more than for looks. Even if it flakes off down the line, I don't care. It still looks nice, though I haven't yet tossed the engine in the car to turn over.

Well, i am powder coating the stainless steel because it is not real stainless steel, and i dont want it to rust and get ugly.

I already know what size my exhaust should be, i was just wondering what the taper to 2.5" at the end would do.

Also, i forgot to mention that they are going to sand blast the muffler before they powder coat it.

The main reason i wanted to get it powdercoated instead of painted is because i already tried to paint it. I scuffed it up with 220 grit sandpaper, and sprayed it down with barbecue spray, but the paint flaked off easily.

I just don't want a rusty muffler down the line, and wanted to make sure that it would stay black.

If you didnt want the bling, glossy black will also stand out, at least more than just flat black.

Simply saying that something flat black draws less attention than gloss black. Not that they arent both less "blingy" than chrome finish.

Well i got the exhaust back today and it looks AWESOME. I didn't realize how nice powder coating is. I wish i could get every removable part on my car powder coated. It is a nice glossy black and is VERY bonded to the muffler. Which is exactly what i wanted.

I know i am supposed to post pics, however i need to find my moms camera. I will soon.

BTW it was only $15.

I would think the powder coat should be able to hold up to the heat from the muffler pretty descently. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts? If it does up peeling & flaking off, you can always get higher temp ceramic coatings, that will handle the heat no problem. There are some high temp coatings that are good till around the 1000-1300F range & then there are the high temp that are good for the 1800-2200F range. I have my turbine housing, FP mani heatshield, O2 sensor housing & downpipe all done in a 2200F satin black coating. It looks amazing & handles the heat no problem.

Is there any way you could post a couple of pics of this? Also, how much did that cost you?

Actually for some strange reason I didn't take any pics after I had the parts coated. Now that everything is installed, you can't see much but if you check out my gallery, the coating on the FP mani heatshield is the same coating on all the other pieces I had done. Just a nice satin black. For price I think it was $400 (CDN) but that was full downpipe with a recirculated dump tube, turbine housing, O2 housing & FP mani heatshield. Also they offered another special internal coating that traps in heat ever further. They don't do turbine housings because of the tolerances but I did have the full downpipe & O2 housing done, think that portion was around $100 of the total above. Place was called fireball coatings, they have a website under that name.

And I'm speaking from personal experience.

My camera wasn't working before i got the exhaust on, but here are some pictures before the powder coat, when it was BBQ spray...

If you can user your imagination and make it glossy, then you have the final product. I will get some installed pics with the final product. I need to clean up the car. I like how the muffler looks flat black when dirty, and sexy when clean.

BTW I have the cat-back put together wrong in these pics, i guess 2 pieces was a bit too confusing for me...

Ahhh, I was thinking you were doing the whole setup from the cat back. How much did you spend having it powder coated? I'm just asking because it would probably just be easier to just sand and prep the muffler, mask off what you don't want painted, and use a 500* rattle can spray paint.

For $8, I bought a can of flat black ceramic coated spray paint good up to 1200*. That would have been the route I would take, and you could probably do a damn good job at it if you take a little time out of your day.

It was $15 total. They also (sand?) blasted the muffler so it would hold better. I think rattle can will work fine on aluminized steel, but rattle can hates to stick to stainless. The paint in the picture literally fell off the muffler when touched.

I think that powder coating the whole cat-back section would be questionable. I think it may be too hot, but with the packing in the muffler, the muffler stays much cooler than the 3" piping before it.

So if you know a place that will do powder coat then get a quote. It doesn't hurt to try to paint it though. If you dont like how it turns out just take carb cleaner to it. The paint will practically melt off.

how does it sound on the car??

It was quieter than my previous exhaust, which was a press bent 2.5" straight-pipe with muffler. But it seems to be getting louder every day. It has a very deep rumble to it, but isnt that loud. The two resonators are very nice. Its far louder in the car than outside.

I am very happy with it! Heres the total on my exhaust...

3" megan racing cat-eliminating downpipe - $120 shipped
3" cat-back exhaust - $165 shipped
muffler powder coating - $15
installation - $60

Total = $360

Not bad for stainless mandrel bent 3"

Installation required extending the downpipe 2", and rotating the flange a hair, by the shop.
