Is a pocketlogger good enough?

Thinking about picking up a pocket logger for now so I can get some tuning done on my 97 gsx. My mods are on my profile. Dont have much money right now for a dsmlink and a eprom. So ill get them one day. So good idea for now?

a logger should work fine for you, if you got a wideband it would be perfect but you can do without one since you have a EGT guge

how much do those things cost used?

EvoScan ... $25
OpenPort 1.3U Cable ... $100
Being able to log Knock ... PriceLess

EvoScan runs on a Laptop. Need that also.

I had a PocketLogger setup for a couple years and not being able to log knock makes it real hard to tune right.

Pocket logger is OBD2. While EvoScan use the factory MUT protocol.
With MUT you get KnockSum(know when your engine is going to blow), Injector Duty Cycle(know you need bigger injectors), and a lot of other goodies.

EvoScan is not perfect, but is the best option for us 2G guys right now.

Just to be clear, you can't tune with just a pocketlogger or evoscan. If you have SAFC or similar, you can use the pocketlogger to help tune your SAFC settings, but the logger alone is just a logger...a recording device...doesn't change your tune. Hope that made sense.

Thanks for the heads up. I already have a safc...it should be in my info :)

i think if you dont have the egt then you gotta have the wideband....the egt tells you if your car is running hotter then usual. If your running to hot then you running lean.

Anyway...with the pocketloger you cant tell if you have knock?

What if you dont have a egt or anything like that? Can you still use the logger?

No, you can use it to tune on a 1g. A few years ago, noone had a wideband, all you had to go by was the logger. just make sure you have a fresh o2 sensor, and the wireing is good. tune for about .9v on the o2 and 0-3 counts of knock. granted a wideband is better, but its not necesary

Hey sorry for hijacking this thread but I think the other question was answered. My question is, I already own an AutoEnginuity scan tool with cable for OBDII cars. Can I use this with OBDGauge? I tried hooking it up with no luck so far.

Wide band is much easier to deal with compared to EGT. A lot of factors can change your EGT, and it has a slower response time. You're also taking a guess at your AFR based on temperatures. It can be an accurate guess, and it can also be a really great tool combined with a wide band to determine things.

I just got my WBO2 hooked up an it's really mind blowing. The narrow band hung out at 2 lights from full rich the whole time I was full throttle. Soon as I floored it, it would go there and stay there until I shifted. A wideband log shows all the way down to rich beyond where the device can read (10.3:1) and all the way up to a scary (13.8:1). I still need to get my logger setup to find out if I'm getting knock.

Before the proliferation of wide bands, people would tune with EGT's, knock, by feel, and by trial and error. All of them can work, but none of them are as easy.

13.8:1 scary? hehehe.. I remember once on the dyno with my old SRT4 I hit in the 16's lean. Talk about nervous. Luckily nothing went bad.

Wait so Let me get this straight..you can tell you get knock with the pocketlogger....But not HOW much knock your getting?. Also what is "timing" like ive been hearing that timing has to be right??!?! sorry for the noob question

I havent messed with a pocket logger in two years or so. But IIRC it will display counts of knock and timing as well.

This is ONLY for the 1g's. The stock ECU on 1g's see's knock... on the 2g's all you can do is guesstimate when you are seeing knock (your ECU will pull timing when your engine knocks -- but pulled timing doesn't 'always' mean that your knocking) with your PocketLOGGER. This is because PocketLOGGER can only show you what the ECU is seeing. I think that EVOscan can actually show you when, and how many, counts of knock that you are experiencing. A nice setup would be a PocketLOGGER with wideband, and a knock sensor... if you can't afford DSMlink.

Only EvoScan can log knock on a 2G. Pocketlogger will show your timing and you can kinda figure knock by looking at your airflow and what your timing should be from the map. Then compare that to your actual timing.

How do you get the knock sensor?

Aftermarket Knock Sensors are pricey, and you don't know if the knock the aftermarket unit and your ECU are seeing are the same.

OHHH i see....so no matter what you'll just be guessing. But with the evoscan you wont
