I was fixing my vabnd for my exhaust today and noticed that my turbo has some side to side play. WHAT does this mean? I have a Garrett t3 t4 turbo the non ball bearing one. For a while now I have been hearing a noise while idle like if i had a heat shield lose or something from the front of the car. Can't really pin point where it is coming from. Could it be my turbo going out? Is there anyone local that knows how to rebuild turbos? no in and out play and doesn't seen to burn oil. Haven't seen any burnt oil on my bumper either so don't believe it burns oil.

Every turbo has different limits for play. When you get a chance, grab the compressor and move it to the limit of its play and spin it, and see if its hitting the housing. If it doesn't then you should be fine. You'll know if the turbo is going out, either you'll be blowing blue smoke out your exhaust, or you'll hear this high pitched whine (sounding completely different from the oncoming of boost) from the turbo that you'll hear in or out of boost, and just get louder with the onset of boost. That most likely signifies that your bearing are going out and the compressor or turbine is scraping against the housing and causing that noise. Did you try searching around and making sure everything is tight around that area? Exhaust isnt scraping on the block or anything?

Every turbo has some side to side and up and down if it didnt the bearings are probly cocked, as stated get in there and do a phyiscal check if the blades are hitting anywhere. As for the noise even the littlest thing can make tons of noise
