hey guys

i need a lot of help. i am looking to turbo my 1998 420a i just purchased. it does have 100+k on it but im pretty sure all the major parts such as the timing belt have been replaced because it runs like a champ. i was thinking about going to a performance shop and just asking them what i needed to do to turbo my 420a. but then i figured that they would give me a bunch of bull just so i would go through with turbocharging it with them and getting extra parts. so i wanted to know what i would have to do to the engine to get it ready for a turbo. i already have a full exhaust manifold, plug covers, intake all that good stuff. what else would you recommend to get? i wanted to know where i could get a cheap turbo kit and what stuff i would need to buy. i was looking on ebay( a friend told me they have cheap good stuff on there for turbos) and i found some kits for 600$ but they said i needed to also purchase a turbo manifold? so please if someone could help me and tell me EVERYTHING that i would need to do and the cheapest possible way to slap on a turbo to my baby. also would i be able to do this job myself?

thanks alot

Okay I'm going to start by saying I have posted threads similar when i had my n/t. I read this thread almost daily and still just never did it. Here is a link to it:

2gnt turbo parts list
Your going to need all types of things from the actual turbo to an oil line. If you dont know cars and especially turbo cars, you might be getting in over your head. Take it from someone who has learned, save your money, keep your car stock. Sell it in a year or two. And by a turbo. (=
Good Luck!

One more thing, the cheap route is not always the best. If you pay dirt, odds are you will get dirt. You have to remember your messing with your motor, not just something little. If you dont buy quality parts then your taking a major chance on that part, as well as your internals, failing.

:edit: (a header is on a n/t, an exhaust manifold is on a turbo, you cant have both! edit your profile)

hahn makes a good turbo kit, everything you need, you want to get a turbo timer and a boost controller, as well bigger injectors to supply the fuel for the boost, and upgrade your spark plugs for a better and high spark, i have a star turbo manifold on my turbo.

Make sure you do plenty of reading and completley understand what your doing before you do this. The 420a motor will not handle a lot of boost so do some reserch on here before attempting this.

hahah thanks crimson, yea before i wanted to buy a gst but with my budget they were SOOO hard to find. and it was also hard to find one that the engine wasn't completely abused and in healthy condition. but yea when i bought the car the guy said that it had a exhaust manifold but then when i popped the hood i saw dc headers. so im not quite sure why he would tell me that it has a manifold on a N/A??? but yea i definitely do not have alot of money. keep in mind im only a high school student soo yea im not looking for an insane track car with a huge turbo. and i prob wont be running anything higher than max 5 psi. i just want a dd that will give me the power when i want it,l because im already craving more and more power. mainly i want to spank on all the rich kids who pull up in brand new audi's at my school. and maybe a regular wrx here and there, ill save the sti's for when i get my evo one day =)

p.s. if anyone can find a turbo kit, like everything i need for under 1k please let me know, maybe ebay or something? i did see some brand name parts such as hahn and treadstone

well believe me when i say building my 420a was not cheap, im built for 28psi, i think the stock 420a can only handle like 10 psi if ieven that, you can make your own kit for like 2000 if you do it right, get a star manifold off ebay for 118, then a t3/t4 turbo, so oil line fittings, ace hardware or something, oil line for your turbo cooling, an intercooler from ebay is like super cheap, blowoff valve,(i love hks ssq) some piping, you can go manual turbo controller or you can go with something like greddy, and you will need a cat back exhast, i have a evo 2 , if you want look at my profile and you can see my set up of my turbo and stuff , p/m me and ill send you some pics of the set up for a closer look and to give you a ideal of what you can do.

Well he could have just meant to call them headers and said exhaust mani, just update so noone else picks on you (= and as far as beating audi's and subies, well good luck haha. I managed to make some civics look like little girls, but you wont get much out of 5psi anyways. I understand your need for power, believe me. And I just graduated from highschool, i work two jobs and go to college. Trust me, just get some bolt ons to satisfy you temporarily. You can get a decent gain with your basic cold air, full exhaust, intake mani, things like that. Just be patient, good things come to those who wait!

ill be honest with you im pushin almost 25psi and about 390whp on 90 oct, and i make subies and civics look slow, i have the only built 420a in alaska every one else has 4g63 ha, but dont get me wrong i have my problems once i install my ems look out. 600 whp is where ill be.

but for you kid i would go with ebay and just buy parts pices by pices that will be cheapest it wont be easy you will have to fab. but you can do it.

thanks crimson, i did update it but yea i think thats what the guy meant. i dunno man cause right now i can keep up with the audis, most of them stock are only pushing about 200bhp. not quite sure if i can handle the subies tho. i do have the basic bolt ons right now. i have the cold air, have the exhaust, and now i am deeply in love with turboing it, thats my only option right now since it would be way to hard for me to get my hands on a gst( i looked at the pics of yours by the way and that is prob what my dream gst is to look like, soooooooooooooo sexy. ive been looking everywhere for that spoiler but i just cant find the same color as my car, ill post some pics later.) about the 5 psi thing many people have recommend to NOT go any higher than 5 on a basic 420a thats why im limiting myself to that.

600?WTF I'm not too sure about that buddy...I was refering to my n/t when i said i made civics look slow. Now I just laugh as they pull up with their bodykits and huge aluminum wings.

And thankyou sparco, i love my car. Now there is a few knicks and dings here and there, but the car is 11 years old haha. Your best bet as far as the wing is buying a primed one and getting it painted.

Back to the turbo talk, honestly, do you know enough to do this? I mean its not impossible if you read and study NONSTOP on this forum. I knew cars, but DSM's are a special breed:dsm:

yea thats prob what im gunna end up doing, but my first step is turbo. engine first appearance second LOL. and yea im trying to get alot of help to learn what i need. thats what i posted initially, getting help on exactly what it was that i needed to turbo my car

alright man thanks alot i appreciate the help. and dont worry ill be askin alot of questions =) but yea what was the link cause i go to 2gnt and there are alot of different threads and stuff. whats the exact link to the step by step process?
