Here's the deal - 2 motors with 2 seperate problems, both 95's, 1 Talon TSi, 1 Eclipse GST.

My GST spun 2 rod bearings pretty badly, so I was going to take the motor from a buddy's Talon & swap out the head, as he had busted his timing belt which made for a good excuse for him to put in a JDM motor. But much to my dismay, when I pulled the head, there's 4 broken valves & some seriously evil scarring on the tops of the pistons.

Now, I've tried to research this as much as possible & read all kinds of threads about Dremeling the sharp edges off, smoothing out the tops as much as possible & slapping it back together, but there were also some that said that the crank and the rods would be suspect... So I'm at an impass & could use a few opinions.

Oh, and I'm also pretty broke, so machine work is probably something I can't afford right now.

So whaddaya think? Do I risk the dremeling? Swap the cranks, put in new bearings and hope for the best? Or just open the garage door slightly, toss in a grenade and walk away quickly?
 
Sorry but missing parts would reduce the likelyhood of a full insurance payout... ROFL

Like bits of a fragmentary grenade stuck in the walls would be easy to explain...

No officer, I have no idea how they got there. Dangdest thing...
 
ROFL just if you grenade it just tell them PEER PRESSURE IS A MOFO LOL

but just swap out the pistons and everything that is good
 
Unfortunately, I'm not real sure how to check the parts to be positive that they're good...

Can I swap pistons between motors? If so, I have to put on new rings, and bearings right? Another problem is that the GST spun rods 1 & 4, while the Talon motor dropped valves in 1 & 3... To ensure no problems with the rods, can I use the #2 piston from the GST in place of the #1 in the Talon motor?

Geez, if this is possible, this is gonna be one frankensteined motor...
 
Sorry about your luck there. If it makes you feel better i blew my small 16g a couple days ago and cant afford another turbo haha
 
Ok, so I think that I have a plan, just need a little more info...

Are the wrist pins pressed in or is it a c-clip?

Here's my plan & thus the question:

I'm thinking that if I swap the piston tops from the spun-bearing motor onto the dropped valve motor rods & swap out the rings also, I basically should be able to salvage the bearings if good. Then it's just a matter of putting the good head on & away we go...


Any thoughts? Ideas? Premonitions? Prophecies of doom?
 
Well, for anybody that's interested, I got both motors torn down & found that all 4 bearings were spun in the GST... :mad:

2 of the rods still looked ok on the bearing surface, so I guess those will have to do for now.

It got a little late to make noise tapping the pistons in, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get it all back together.

With luck, it'll hold together, won't make any noise & will last me long enough to get enough cash saved up to do it right.
