Tuning Help ASAP

Hey guys I have been a long time forum member but almost never have posted. I recently bought a new 1997 gst and drove it all the way from PA to Boston to get her home. Now I just had a problem. The car is extensively modded, including 880 injectors, gt-40 turbo and runs on 50/50 E-85 and 93 octane. The car was street tuned so not the greatest but it got the job done. Now today I was having a new radio and speakers installed and the guy installing it disconnected the battery. Now I am in a pickle because, although the car runs on dsmlink, the guy I bought it from got it tuned by his friend and did not provide the cable to connect to the laptop. I've searched everywhere to try to buy a cable but I can not find it or find onyone to borrow it from. I live in Boston Ma and would like any help from anyone that has input. Even if someone was willing to help me out over the phone or even better meet with me and try to at least help me with a street tune I would greatly appreciate it. I forgot to mention that the way the car is sitting it will be really tough to take to a shop to tune. I am willing to pay if someone could meet me and at least get it drivable or do a full out tune because I am already getting quoted for 400 dollars to tune it at a shop. Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick reply but don't I still need someway to connect to the obdII port. I was lookin at the port and I dont think that can connect directly into there. I might be wrong tho. Thanks again tho. Because my laptop has a serial port, I just need what can connect to the OBDII port.

You won't be able to tune it without the cable. And it is pretty pointless to have somebody bring their cable to help you tune. If you do that then you will have to find somebody everytime you need to change a setting or to see what your car is doing. Try to get the cable from the previous owner. ECMTuning will most likely not sell you a new cable. This is because of people making copys of dsmlink and then selling it. Nobody else that I know of makes a cable, and if they do it might not work properly.

Did the previous owner include anything?? There should be an adapter that plugs into your OBDII port and allows you to plug a serial-to-serial cable into it. DSMlink is worthless without this adapter, especially since you can't just go buy a new one from ECM Tuning. I would bug the previous owner for it!!

Yea I wish I could. It would save me a huge headache but his friend tuned the car and they lived next to each other so he never needed the cable. Thanks for your help too. I'm in a tight spot because the car literally can run the way it is so I couldn't even take it to someone to help me out.

Do they sell just the adapter or something because I kind of needed the car by wednesday to be running but I had to be stupid and get the radio installed. Like I said in my previous post, ECMTuning will most likely not sell you a new cable. This is because of people making copys of dsmlink and then selling it.

Dang, looks like I'm gonna have to buy a whole new version of dsmlink then. Do they just sell the cable and software anywhere because I dont need the ecu, I only need the software and cable.

DSMLink piracy is heavily frowned upon around here and will result in bad things happening to you. Suck it up and purchase another copy if the previous owner won't give you the cable.

Do you even know if the ECU still has the DSMLink chip? Sounds odd that the previous owner would keep the cable but leave the chip. Might want to open the ECU and look. You arent going to get anywhere without it.

Yea I wouldn't want to do anything dishonest so don't worry about that. This morning I checked the ECU and its an eprom. I talked with the guy who sold it to me an he said his friend did all the tuning and he is the one who has the cable and program.

I just talked to a local tuning shop and they told me that I have to get the specific cable from dsmlink because they put a chip in their OBD2 to serial cable to work with dsmlink. Therefore an obd2 cable from advance auto parts will not work. Is this true?

1. Are you positive you have DSMlink? Open up your ECU and look at the chip. It should say DSMlink on it, as Brent said. I would do this before going any further to make sure DSMlink is the reason your car isn't running. You mentioned your ECU was an EPROM, but which EPROM chip is in there?

2. Yes, you have to buy the adapter/cable from ECM Tuning. You cannot get the cable any other place. And please don't try to buy the cable any other place.

I just contacted the guys at ecm tuning. Yea i checked and it said dsmlink on it. The problem is that the chip in it is burned for a 16g turbo and smaller injectors. So it turns on and everything it just runs terribly. I am here in Boston trying to find someone that can at least try to give me a street tune so that I could get around.

If you don't have the OBD-II interface cable, the only option is to purchase one from ECMTuning or get it back from the previous owner. If you obtain one any other way, it will be piracy.

Yea I contacted the dsmlink guys. I am just going to buy it altogether again because I dont want to deal with this fishy business. The only thing thats gonna be tough is the tune because the local shops are charging me 500 bucks. Unless someone from the forums can help me out a bit its going to be tough for me to pay for everything at once. And about not having enough fuel it runs pretty good because the engine is bored over so it spools the turbo ok.
