I finally got the Eclipse registered (damn state takes FOREVER to get the title to me). Now I've been driving it lately and theres a few things bothering me. One of which is at about 4,000 rpm and at least 1/2 throttle there is a noise under the hood that literally sounds like brake squealing. I've never heard this before on this car (it used to be my sisters so I've driven it before). I was thinking tensioner or idler pulley, but wouldn't that make the noise all the time and not just at high rpm? The car had a new trans put in about 2 years ago, just changed the oil the other day. It sat in a garage for about six months before I got it, and another month or so in my driveway waiting to get the title. I've been working on the maintenance, but between me and my girl we have 4 cars so its a bit to keep up with. Anyways, thanks for any help in advance! :)

While I'm posting, I guess I'll also go ahead and ask why would I have oil all over the outside of cylinder 1's plug wire boot. I pulled all four plugs/wires and cylinder 1's boot and the end of the plug (the part sticking out of the head) had a decent amount of oil on them but the other 3 were bone dry. Any tips on that?

Check your belts; they could be worn and/or loose.

I would recommend you pull all the plugs, while your at it, and check to see if there is oil on them and what condition they are in.

Oil around the plugs may mean a valve cover gasket. It comes with the VC gasket, the half-oval, and spark plug gaskets.

the oil on the plug could be from the valve cover gasket or if you just missed a little when you poured the oil in for the oil change. As for the squealing its easy to get that from a bad bearing on a power steering pump or alternator. Mine did the same thing with the power steering. I would recommend to pull the belts off the pump and check the pump for leaks or shaft play or anything indicating a bad bearing. good luck.
