Well, I bought my first DSM, and it will be a nice long welcome to the club!

It's a 92 Talon TSi AWD, blue, and nicely modded to give me a starting block. The issue though, is it has rod knock. It will be flat-bedded home on the 31st at which time I'll be tearing the bottom end off to replace the bearings with nice new Clevite pieces and hopefully remedying the issue. But, it's overall very nice. Apex'i 3" turbo-back, Dejon tool GM MAF UIC pipes w/ MAF and translator, big 16g, MBC, koni yellows, looks like Ground Control coilovers. I'm real excited to get it home and back running again. If all goes well in good time I may try to make the shootout with it. :thumb:

These are the pictures I have at the moment, I'll get more once I get it home. :D

The exterior looks to be in good shape nice find:thumb: how much did you pay for it?

$1,500. I think I got a good deal. ;) The exterior needs a little work. The drivers side front fender needs to be replaced and the clearcoat is peeling on the spoiler. Luckily I paint, so it will be getting a fresh coat of blue, with black on the roof and possibly the spoiler.

6 bolt swap time! :D what month was the car built? it might have a 6 bolt already since it a 92. You got a pretty good deal off of it. It still looks good.

Already has a 6 bolt and a 4 bolt rear end. :D I'm stoked. Just ordered new ACL rod bearings. I can't wait to get it up and running, the guy I'm buying it from is claiming it ran a 12.3 at IIRC 28 psi with 118 octane. Even if it's mid 13s it will still blow the doors off my DD sadly enough. :sneaky:

Love the blue on the talon. I wish mine was that color. Mine has the same problem with the clear coat peeling on the spoiler. Good luck with it. Mine had a rod knocking.. I ended up buying another motor and in the process of swapping

Thanks, I like the color too. I'm going to see how a few things polish out and decide if I'm going to repaint the whole car or just do repairs and wheel/blend it out. I'm hoping the crankshaft isn't screwed, but it very well could be, so I might end up dropping the crank and replacing that as well with the rod bearings, I won't really know until I tear it down and inspect/plastigauge the crank. :| Either way I'll probably build up a new engine over the winter and start completely fresh.

I realized something last night though. I'm not sure if most of you are familiar with Matt Shehan, but he's basically infamous around here for owning more DSMs than most people think exist. Well, this is the car that started it all, his first DSM. I'm hellbent on restoring it to its former glory. It will be pretty awesome when it's all said and done.

Thanks for the comments, keep em coming! I need more things to respond to so I can post in the "non-n00b" forums!

Update story time!!!

Pictures of it in it's new habitat will follow tomorrow, but for now I have the story of how I got this thing home. In true DSM fashion, it wasn't easy, and it definitely didn't go without near disaster.

It took us nearly an hour to get it on to the tow dolly... yes, I said tow DOLLY. No, I'm not insane, it's just all I could find. The first task was disconnecting the driveshaft from the rear end as to not grenade the center diff, a fairly easy task, especially with the use of air tools (thanks Scott!), but daunting none the less. After the free end of the driveshaft was secured to a frame rail, we started rolling it forward toward the dolly. The driveshaft broke itself loose, and I had to re-wire it to the frame once it was up, but that was after significant work just to get it ON to the tow dolly. The car was so low we had to jack up the coilovers all the way just to have any chance in hell of getting the thing on, and not crushing the exhaust can in the process. We positioned the truck in such a way [blocking the road completely] that the angle on the ramps was a little bit less, pwning the front bumper just a little bit less as it scraped its way up. We barely mannage to get the wheel straps down tight and pull out of the driveway as the blue 1gb leaves yet another previous owner's home.

All is well... we think. 12 mile meets Mound, and we take the right turn. The car doesn't straighten out quite as much as it has before... and there's a new grinding sound coming from behind us. Oh $hit. Thank the car gods there is a truck entrance to the GM Tech Center right there, because the car had broken loose of one of the wheel straps, and was hanging half way off the tow dolly, sitting on the cross member with the passenger front tire still securely in place. We redneck the hell out of it with a massive tiedown strap to pull the car back up into place, and strap it down once more. It stayed. We got it home, pushed it down the ramps, and into it's current resting spot next to the shed, getting comfy with the 'maro.

Tomorrow may not be a very productive day, neither will Saturday, but hopefully Sunday I'll be able to find time to get the driveshaft re-connected, and get the thing washed, especially the engine bay. Once that's done, assuming the Jeep is out of the garage and 4" higher, I'll be pulling (read: pushing) the dizzum into the garage and proceeding to tear the shit out of the bottom end. Best case scenario: The crank is fine, throw in the new ACL rod bearings, put the UICP back together, hook up the MAFT, and go. Worst case... WTF

MORE TO COME!!!!! :sneaky:

Pictures later. Can't upload at work. :D

It's time for a big-old nasty update! The car went up on jacks last week and I've been making steady progress. The issue has been diagnosed...

Yup, that's my #1 rod bearings, fused together at one end and leaving a large gap of death at the other. I could visibly move the rod before I took the cap off.

Done some cleaning and painting in the engine bay as well. Granted all of this will be taken back apart this weekend when I start pulling the motor so I can swap in the new crank and replace all the bearings and seals in the bottom end. :|

Been cleaning the hell out of everything I touch and painting everything with rust on it, so it should be a very nice, clean build once I get everything back together. But now, it's picture time. :sneaky:

Nice strut towers! Planning on doing anything to your header or intake mani?

I want to swap out the exhaust manifold for an Evo3 and possibly have it coated, and as far as the intake I'll probably end up shaving and polishing it. They're really killing the look of the engine bay right now.

car looks good

Thanks, it's coming along pretty well. It needs some body work and paint, I'm still debating if I should paint it before or after winter. I'm hoping to have it running by the end of the month, and it should be FMIC'd and tuned on E85 with 850cc injectors and a rewired walbro 255 by the end of the year. Shooting for a modest 300awhp on the 16g. :thumb:

Project kind of got put on the back burner for a few days. The clutch in my DD Camaro started going out, so I had to order a new clutch for that, basically wrecking my DSM budget until my next paycheck. I'm thinking right now I'll just fix the engine and get it running, and do the clutch later as much as I don't want to do that. My only real motivation for that is that I still need to get it registered and insured, and I have a meet I want to get the car to on September 13th!

The current wheels are going to get painted white and used for winter/rally duty while I stock away some $$$ for the new wheels in the spring.

Still to go or in progress:
- Replace rear driveshaft u-joint
- Replace crankshaft, main and rod bearings
- Install SRB aluminum flywheel (got new Fidanza surface for it)
- New Clutch (ACT 2600 or similar)
- Braided stainless brake/clutch lines
- Finish painting wheels (I have one half white wheel)

I have most of the parts for the above, just need a lower gasket kit, the clutch, and some time to finish everything up. Taking college classes full time and working 25 hours a week doesn't leave me much time to work on the dizm lately. :(

did you paint the bay at all or did you just clean the shit out of it? if so what paint did you use and where did you get it?

I just cleaned the hell out of it. Cover everything important with a plastic bag, duct-tape, and/or zipties, soak with your choice of automotive degreaser, pressure wash.

It will be looking even cleaner soon once I get everything back together and touch up a few things.
