:talon:i want to buy a holset hx35 from this guy! he says he is giving me a great deal on the mechanicaly sound unit for $500..... and brags that they are comparible to the gt35r.
i know that these come off a dodge diesel, and make some crazy hp#'s. any info on this would be great.

$500 is a little on the high side for the current going rate. Add to that the cost of the Bullseye housing and you are almost in the price range where you could consider a brand new turbo. I have seen them sell for around $300 but if this guy guarantees that it is good it might be worth it. Check the super long Holset thread for lots of good info but you need a few free hours.

BAD DEAL. The hx-35 is comparable to an evo 16g. Ive made more power on my 16g than some others have on hx-35's. They can handle a lot of boost though. One guy here made 320whp on pump gas and thats they most they could get out of it.

Also you would have to buy another housing and that cost another $200 bucks. If you get an hx you want the hx-40. Remember the hx-35 is like the t25 to the diesel world and they give them away for free to upgrade pretty much. Junk yards also sell them pretty cheap.

I don't know about all that. I was doing extensive research on running a holset...those things are AWESOME. They are definately better than and e3 once you get them on and running right. dsmonster and i were talking for a while, and for the price, his h1c flows GREAT. They aren't a 35r by any means, but they can definately get the job done, with a good setup, and good tune, you can see 500 horse.

The price on yours is high though...there's guys picking them up off the junkyard for $75

well IF i went with that hx35 i would probably go with a dnp tubular ss manifold that would bolt it right up. im planing on putting it up to 13.5 psi on that hx35 till my 780 injectors and new 255 walbro show up, then im crankin her up to bout 20-23 psi. yes i know if i want it to run right then i need the dsm link. in not new to turning the old wrench in my garage, but i am new to turbo setups, so granted i dont know what the @#$% to look for so thats why im talkin to you fellers.:D:thumb:.i would also like to know if my little 4g63ts displacement will have a hard time spoolin the hx35?

They spool fine, I know that the stock housings on the hx-40 are 1.0 ar which is a little big to bolt right up. You can also buy a housing for a t3 mani that would spool better. Not sure what ar housing is on the hx-35. If you look at the compressor map for the hx-35 it does not push that much air. They can make 400-500whp but thats with a lot of work and some type of race fuel. On pump gas it doesnt make that much.

Im the guy selling the turbo to him. it comes with 2 internal wastegates and a polished comp housing. it has 30 k miles on it without any shaft play. Yeah you might get one from a yard but not anything in any condition to run 20 plus psi on for 75 bucks. I know cause I work at a salvage yard. I am also helping him install the turbo and run a 90 degree elbow to his down pipe. that is if he wants it. he said he wants 400 to 500whp. He has a list of mods he is doing. it is a proven turbo.

I also didn't compare it to a gt35r as performance wise but size wise. it is only a oil cooled thrust bearing turbo.

Holset is a proven turbo and has an unexpected fast spool time for a non-bb and a huge housing. I think it's more reliable than a GT35R. It's rated for more airflow and it's easier to rebuild. You have to understand that Cummins Holset turbo are meant for diesel truck, they are made to take the abuse and lots of boost.

I don't know much about the HX-35 but the HX-40 is comparable to the GT35R power-wise and will outspool the GT35R leaving it in the dust.

Yes they are very fast spooling turbos. If I remember right the hx-35 is a lot smaller than the gt35r. The hx-40 is closer to that size.

You're getting your information totally wrong. The HX35 is actually compariable to a 60-1 turbo and the hx40 is similar to the smaller of the gt35s. Its actually easy to make power out of it also. You cant knock on a turbo you havent tried yet. My friend made a little less than 450 on pump gas. Throw in some VP Import and your breaking past the 500 mark easily. And his setup is pretty mild at that still on the stock IM.

To the OP. Really if it already has the BEP housing and comes with the feed and drain I can see it as being alright. But it you look on ebay they are going for around $200-$300 all day long in good condition on the stock t3 or t4 housing.

yes it comes with a ss line and a drain line also. the turbo is in great condition and I told him I would negotiate.

:tease:
I got almost 500hp now with my EVO III 16G.

I'll put money that you don't even have 400. An evoIII cannot compare to an hx-35.

OP: Bad deal man if you can do everything yourself. If you don't want to do anything, and just want to play, it sounds like the seller is going to help you out so I'd say ok, if you have the money.

While I have to agree that Jay is very wrong about the potential with pump gas of the hx35, it does not flow in the range of the 60-1. It flows in the range of the 50-trim. . . or about 3 lb/min more. And is MUCH more efficient. It can put down 500whp. And, with pump gas, it can show higher numbers than the "pump gas king" 50-trim. It is more comparable to a gt30r than any other but spools faster and is rebuildable, where any BB turbo is not. Transient response of the hx35 turbine and BEP housing is PHINOMINAL from personal experience. My h1c (very similar to the hx35) spools and respools as fast as my SMALL 16g. An evo3 16g can't touch it's flow potential, nor does it actually spool faster.

Nevertheless, this is not a good deal for a used hx35 at all. Wait for cheaper. Ebay and some place like dieseltruckresource.com classifieds are your friends. However, they SHOULD be worth this used because of their advanced aerodynamics, durability, and wide operating range. How many turbos spool as fast as a small 16g and flow quite a bit more than than a 20g?

No one has almost 500whp from an evo3 16g except for Curt Brown. . .

Wow dsm-onster. I was going to post about the same thing you did but you definatly covered it way better than I would have. Lots of good info. Only question I have is it off of an automatic or a manual. The auto would be an hy-35 and the manual would be an hx-35. Most hy-35's have a 9cm housing while the 12cm housing are common on the hx-35. Also the hy-35's are a great turbo but a bastard model; the common hybrid hx-35/40 isn't possible either.

Yup, I totally agree with dsm-onter. I had doubts before in the hx-40 a non bb and humorous size but what's not give testing it after all it's cheap and it blew me away. It's time to give Holset life and give double bb turbos a competition.
