Hey, guys. I searched the threads and didn't find anything exactly like my problem.

Every time I jump into my '97 GSX and go to start it, the clutch pedal hits the floor with no pressure. After I pull it back up with the tip of my foot and pump it a few times, it's good for the rest of the day. It feels as if it won't fully disengage. If I try to put it into gear, it just grinds until I pump it about 5 times, then its fine. What the hell?

Could be a number of things.
1. Air in the line.
A. Caused by loose or bad fitting.
2. Bad Clutch Master Cylinder
3. Bad Clutch Slave Cylinder
4. Clutch Needs Replacing

I would start by bleeding the line. Then check the fittings if it does it again. If that doesn't do it try the slave cylinder. Its cheaper than the master. Thats why I would do it first. The slave is i think about 30 bucks online an the master is 70 not much anyway. If that doesn't do it then its the Clutch which runs around 400 for a good one. I went threw that hole process when I did mine. Good thing is I got a warranty on the hole set-up. So no worries here.

+ 1 on bleeding the clutch. I had this same problem and let it get bad. I hardly ever take my car on the road and the fluid turned to garbage, bled it with some new DOT 3 and was set, good as new. Check if your fluid is low also. I don't know if you've ever bled it before considering it a 97 that fluid will degrade, if I am correct. After that if you still have the problem then everything whitehawk said.

sounds like a hydraulic issue start by bleeding it and check for excessive moisture inside the boot of the slave and back side under the dash of the master. Both master and slave were leaking in mine when I had to pump my pedal several times to get it into any gear

The master is not a "grease able" part. If there is anything slimy back there, that isn't grease off the springs in the clutch pedal itself, is going to be clutch fluid. It sounds like your master is leaking.

Double check your grease situation.

Most of the time Your Master will leak into the car. look at your carpet. do you have a dark streak from under the clutch pedal? When Mine went i never actually seen the fluid. I just started getting dark spots on the carpet. As for the slave. I never found the fluid that leaked out. I was just losing fluid! I was filling the fluid once a week. Good Luck

Holy misinformation thread.

Having no pressure after an entire night of driving and having to pump the pedal is more symptom of a slow leak somewhere in the system. Air in the system is more like a spongy feel.

"Grease" around the master boot is NOT ok. That is where you are slowly leaking. Look at the carpet underneath that area. I'll bet it's a dark, greasy mess.

You need to change your master. Might as well change your slave while you're at it, since they see the same amount of wear. Just bleeding isn't going to do you any good.

I had a feeling about something so I rechecked it...

When I bled my system, it wasn't sealed all the way and I was in a hurry. Long story short, I re-bled the system and found air! I pulled it all out and my clutch is like new!

Thanks for your help, guys! :thumb:
