Ok so heres my situation... i bought my laser rs for 600 knowing there was an issue with compression. so i took the cylinder head off and noticed on of my valves was actually missing a piece you can see for yourself in my pictures. so i know with that there i need head work. i checked the cylinder walls for damage and all looked very clean and looked to be working properly but my car does have 205,000 miles there is no bearing chatter or anything like that. so my question is should i just get the cylinder head replaced or the whole engine i know this is kind of a dumb question but keep in mind i do have a VERY limited budget. i dont want a race car right away i just want it to be reliable. do you think the crank bearings will last another maybe 20k miles at the most? i know i have a good bottom end considering its a 6 bolt from the first gen. Thank you guys i love this fourm and please do leave a reply

i wouldnt replace the entire motor. but then again its only a few more bolts. depends on how long/what you plan on running for boost and the big ? how much money you have to spend.

id just rebuild the head since the car isnt awd.

How many miles? It depends on how you treat the car for how long it will last. If you give it hard cold runs it will kill the motor. I just recently took apart a 7 bolt with 167,000 miles and took apart a 6 bolt with 150,000 miles, the difference in the bearings was very amazing to me how the 7 bolt had main bearings eaten to piece and the 6 bolt was no where close to crankwalk. Neither motor walked when I took them apart. I think its more of a time and knowledge issue than a money issue. its not too expensive to rebuild a 4g63. If it was me and I had the time I could get the motor in, out, and rebuilt in about a week.

How long can you afford to have the car down for? I'm big on 'do it right, do it once.' If you can have the car down, why not just pull the motor, fix the head, put new bearings on (not very expensive parts), plus do the balance shaft elimination (again, cheap). With the engine out, it will also be easier to swap the pumps and the timing belt.

If you need to have the car running asap, disregard everything I just said.

It frees up a little bit more power, increases vibrations you feel and takes away the chance that the balance shaft belt will get destroyed potentially taking out the timing belt. Your car also revs quicker. It's worth it if you are taking out the engine anyways.

just remember, the 4g63 is a great motor, if treated well...take the time, do it right, youll have a ton of fun not only learning but with the finished product.
