I just bought a 95 talon tsi awd automatic. Can someone give me any info on the performance of an automatic. Also it seems to me that the car is not boosting at its full potential.I hear lots of air but car is not pulling as hard as it should.I have been in other people stock turbos and there car pulls harder.I looked the car over and it looks pretty good but I think it may have a leak.Where would normal problems be with leakage on a stock 95 Dsm?I did notice that the cooling fan blades were a little melted. The car has no smoke or smeel. It has the upper hard pipe and the lower, aftermarket radiator and a 3" stainless exhaust. Also when I am driving the car and at full throttle a lil bit of smoke comes from the exhaust pipe.Is that normally? Thanks everyone for all your help

Black smoke coming out of the exhaust on full throttle is normal for these cars as long as they remain stock. They come tuned rich from the factory because it increases the reliability of the engines.

The simplest method to determine what your car is boosting would be to hook up an aftermarket boost gauge because the stock one is totally inaccurate. It also wouldn't hurt to do a boost leak test.

What is your opion on an automatic?I heard they are just as fast if not faster from a take off then a 5 speed. Thanks for replying to the first question

You really want to know? Alright, I like shifting so would never even consider an auto. I have nothing against them and they are kinda nice in traffic, but I autocross my car, I like driving it fast, and I like being in complete control of it, so autos aren't for me.

Turbocharged autos can be faster from a take off because you can gas/brake them to load the torque converter and get the turbo spooled before takeoff, where in a manual you have to feather the clutch until boost arrives.

However, the downside is that the shifts take longer, they rob power, and you don't have as much control over them. I don't know about dsm auto trannys, but in my experience autos tend to break more and cost more to repair than their manual equivalents.

Autos don't loose boost between shifts, which leads to the misconception that they ARE faster. The MKIV Supras are faster Autos then 6 speeds, but that's it. It really depends on the gearing. You could put a shift kit. I'm not familiar with autos in DSMs.

As for you problem, boost leak test the thing. Then report back.
