Question about the battery tie down/belt tensioner "tool"

Ok I did the search and looked at the vfaq website but I still have a lingering question. When I get the timing belt covers off and I get ready to use the tensioner tool, is it a basic screw it in very slowly until it compresses the tensioner then I can adjust my cam gear or I was reading something about putting a drill bit in between the tensioner and the push rod gap to make sure it's within specs. Do you guys folow me? All i'm trying to accomplish is my intake cam gear is off by a tooth and i'm just trying to adjust it, not trying to take off the belt. Any input would be appreciated.
 
You're describing the tensioning procedure, which you have to do AFTER correcting the timing issue. First you need to loosen the belt and be sure the timing is correct. Then you deal with the timing belt tension. I'm not sure what your question is about the tension, whether it's about the tool or measuring with a drill bit.

If it's the tool, I've actually just found it easier to buy a long threaded bolt from the hardware store. No modification necessary. If the threads do not reach far enough to push the tensioner you can just slip a 1/4" ratchet extension between the bolt and tensioner piece.

If it's about measuring, using a drill bit is a convenient way to do it, but not the only tool you can use (feeler gauges or whatever else). Just be sure you have something that is the appropriate width and can pass it through the gap between the tensioner rod and the metal tab it presses on. The gap must be within those limits.
 
Thanks for the info. The question was about the tools itself, if that tool was all i had to use to get the belt loose to move the intake cam gear cause it's off a tooth. I dont want to move the whole belt just need a little slack. Sounds like alot of stuff to do. I was planning on doing this tomorrow but since i have never messed with timing, it sounds like I might need another body around to guide me through.

LOL, too true. That's the way it usually goes.

And to loosen the belt what you really need is to loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner pulley. Of course you'll need the tool to retension. Make sure you line up your timing marks and clamp the belt gently to the cam sprockets. You may have a small chance of just readjusting without issue.
 
I've never done it with the engine in, but it will be pretty hard to get the lower timing belt cover off with all that stuff in the way. You'll probably want to pull the alternator and really anything else that's in the way. I recommend looking at the VFAQ timing write up.
 
Go to a Hardware store and buy a length of 8mm threaded rod and make the proper tensioner compression tool and forget about this battery holddown mod junk.

Also, get two 13mm nuts to thread on one end and cinch them together with two wrenches so you have something to put a socket on.

Makes the job go tons easier.

Thanks for the info. I went to about 3 different mom and pop hardware stores and i got 1 left to check out. I don't have a battery tie down anyways so I knew i was'nt going to be using that but great pics though. That helps out alot.
 
Or save on gas and effort of modification and just purchase the right tool from the start:

my length of 8mm rod and two nuts hit me only less than 3 bucks! I got my length of rod from a large nationwide hardware store. "Mom and Pop" stores don't have the demand for metric stuff that all well, thus they don't stock that sort of stuff.

As for the tensioner roller adjusting trick, a 14mm socket on a socketwrench and an allen did the job quite nicely.

Woo! glad I took the FVAQ suggestions.

Well not much modding for a long bolt with 2 screws, i'm not trying to wait a week for parts anywho, I could be done by then. But I'm going to order ultimately so I have the tools for future useage. Appreciate the comments guys.

Second question. With that tool, to sum it up just screw it in and when it gets to the bracket, will it start to loosen the belt? From there can't I ijust make my adjustments from there? I can see where you scew it in and you don't need to pull all the belts, pulleys etc. Is this right?
 
No, to loosen the belt you loosen the bolt on the timing belt tensioner pulley. The bolt is off set from the middle so the pulley swings. When you want to retension there are two small holes in it to use the other tool on. You swing it up and towards the center (clockwise) to tension and the opposite to loosen. (It may be the opposite direction for you though. I believe the direction of tension switched on the 2G's, but I've never done a 7-bolt so I don't know for sure.
