My fellow DSMers. I was reading throught other fourms and could not find what i was looking for. I have a 95 TSI AWD. The car was running fine until the other day i went to start it up and got nothing. The car is turning over but it is not firing to start up. I have checked all my plugs and wires and they are all ok. Battery has a good strong charge. I am possibly thinking it could be the timing belt. I also was thinking maybe a fuel pump but i do have fuel pressure because when i go to start it i can smell the fuel. Can anyone help me out with any ideas it could be or what i can look at as well instead of thoes couple things. Thanks you very much.:)

Pull all of the spark plug wires out, then pull a spark plug out of the well, connect it back to the spark plug wire (outside of the head, of course). Then hold the spark plug tip to your chassis and have a friend ignite the car a couple of times. Do this in a dim environment to see if you can see the spark arc itself to the chassis. This way you can tell if you have spark or not. Report back and I'll give you more to do for your diagnosis.

you can just stick a screwdriver in it and hold it close to the valve cover to see if it arcs.
check your coil packs. (i have a 2g laying around if you need one)

or maybe your ignition (power) transistor

Coil Pack is good I checked that. I also pulled all the plugs and replaced them. I did test each one to make sure i was getting good spark and it was. Arch was strong. And after doing all that i still had no fire. Does anyone know if it could be a crank position sensor. /would this cause a promblem like this? Thanks for the help:)

more then likely it is going to be your cam position sensor. One went out on my friends car and it didn't get spark. Replaced it and fired right up. if its not that its your crank sensor.

Wait...you can smell fuel when you start the car? You have a leak and you're not getting fuel to the engine.

If he's turning the engine over and flooding the dang thing, he's going to smell fuel in a couple of places, mostly his exhaust and in his oil :p

The car will at least spit and attempt to start at low fuel pressures (assuming it isn't too low considering he hasn't told us fuel is dropping on the ground). I'm really just thinking its an ignition problem. Cam sensor would be one of the first places I'd look after checking the coil pack.

if you smell fuel when cranking. sounds like a cold start sensor. its on the thermo housing. what happens is the sensor sends a message to the ECU and tells the antifreeze temp. then sends a signal to the injectors on how much fuel to spray for an ez start up. when the sensor gos bad it puts the injectors on an open cycle. and pretty much floods the car out. look up (no start ):dsm: it was a 24 $ fix for my 91 gsx. autozone had one in stock.
