To start off with, I've had a DSM in the past, a 1991 Talon TSi AWD. I have since gotten rid of the car but managed to save some of my parts in hopes of a new project.
My buddy wants to sell me his 1994 Talon TSi. It too is AWD and is the fully loaded model (i figured that out from the vin). It has leather, sunroof, and *dramatic pause* a 7 bolt. There was a point in time (about a year ago) where I knew most every nut and bolt on a 6 bolt motor 1g car. I have since lost the touch and the car in question has a 7 bolt motor.
:: meat and potatoes section ::
Do 1g 7bolts crankwalk any more or less than 6bolt motors? I've gotten mixed information from this site and many others that I have researched. Some say a 7bolt 1g motor is as good or better (depending on application) than a 6bolt. The only thing people can agree on is that a 2g 7bolt is usually not favored for modification.
The car in question suffered from overheating issues. I suspect a leaky head gasket. My friend pulled the head and had it magnafluxed. Several cracks were discovered so the head to tossed long before I knew the car was even up for grabs. It has been sitting for about a year with no head on it. I dont know if this is even worth all the hassle. Other than that, the car is in pretty nice shape. He has everything to get the motor back together minus the head. I think I would want to do a full rebuild with new oil pump, water pump, bearings, timing belt, etc. Is it worth it, is this motor even worth my time?
$300.
Such a bargain, how can i pass it up? I have a evoIII 16g and a few other toys waiting for another project, should this be the one? Or should I pass it up in favor of a genuine 6 bolt car.
:: sidebar question ::
Anybody ever had any luck rebuilding a turbo? My 16g has some shaft play and certainly needs repair or replacement. The impeller wheel looks like it has slightly rubbed on the compressor housing removing maybe a few thousandths, which I'm sure would GREATLY impact the efficiency and capability of the turbo. Any input?
:: strange question ::
Most of the talk I've seen on the issue of crankwalk involves the clutch putting pressure on the crank with low oilpressure on starting and a few other things of a related nature. Do cars with auto trannies suffer from crankwalk as frequently or as seriously as M/T equipped models? I ask because this car is automatic. My last car was auto and seemed to do me quite well. I dont need a dissertation on auto vs manual, I already know all about it and have done the research in that department.

I live in Alaska where internet is hard to come by in some places (where I live). So, I have to drive and leech WiFi from somewhere in one of the bigger towns. That being said, I might not get to reply to any of this until possibly thursday evening.
Your helpful responses are greatly appreciated.
