I put new rear bearing plates and rear struts on my 2g awd. Just some OEM replacements. The old ones were soo rusted nothing was really saved. Had to buy a new bushing and sleve from autozone.

Went for a ride around the block and now the top of the struts are sticking through the bearing plates. There is nothing holding the top of the strut down. What did I forget or miss? Anyone have a pic of what I need or a pic of the assembly? I need to fix this asap.
Or a pic on capps. Since I don't have it on my work pc.
Thanks

Thanks. How did you find that? I can't figure out this caps thing. I click on rear suspension and I can't click on anything except the center of the sub frame.

Also, what could I be missing that holds the strut down into the bearing plate?

I am so happy to have Mitchell's On Demand 5, Hollander parts interchange (domestic/import). Makes this so much easier when needing to work or do maintanance on a car.

Also, Gamble97 where in IL are you located? I'm about an hour south of Effingham.

Double click on the numbers above "Rear Suspension". Then, use the arrow buttons to navigate through the different pages once you're in the Rear Suspension category.

The nut on top holds the strut in place. You should have all the parts listed on the pic on post number 2.

I'd say you left the dust boot off. Inside the dust boot is a metal cup that needs to be there. Number 41415 in the caps pic.

Since you bought your struts from autozone, they are not the same as the factories. They are more than likely made different and need to be installed different. So you probably won't be able to go off of these stock diagrams when its time to reassemble.
I bought some stock rear replacement shocks from autozone for my civic and I installed them without reading the instructions, LOL, how hard is it to put on a strut right? I ended up having the same problem as you where the top of the struts were sticking up through the trunk because there was nothing to hold it there. So I tore it back apart, and come to find out I had assembled the new struts wrong. Its kind of hard to explain, but the top shaft of the strut was tapered at the end and there was a thick washer that had to be installed over the taper before the strut slid up and in from underneath the car. Thats not a very good explanation I know, sorry if I didn't help out any.

Yes your right, I left the dust boot off. Everything was sooo rusted, nothing was able to be saved.
Gorilla, I know what your saying but the problem is that autozone doesn't carry the stupid dust boots.
I went to murrays, advanced auto, and autozone. Autozone doesn't carry them at all.
Murrays is full of stupid people working there.
And advanced auto is full of the biggest jackass's I've ever met. This place should burn down. I have never been somewhere, where they NEVER have anything in stock.

Have you tried your local Mitsubishi dealership? Dust boots aren't that expensive.

As for your strut sticking out the top, you do have all of these parts?
1) Bump stop
2) Rubber isolator (the round ring looking thing)
3) Bottom rubber bushing
4) Top rubber bushing
5) Bump stop cap (made of metal)
6) Tube (that goes in between the bushings when everything is installed
7) Nut to hold everything in place.

Thanks, I will call them.
So here is another question, so autozone carries struts and a bushing kit, that's it. Do they expect everyone to use their old parts to get it to work?

Yes, they expect everyone to use their old parts. All 4 isolators (the big rubber round ring looking part) on my car were trashed and so compressed that you couldn't even tell they were isolators. As for the bump stops, you can reuse them assuming they aren't cracked or disfigured. You should be able to reuse the bump stop caps and the metal tube/sleeve. You can use factory or aftermarket bushings. Last time I checked Prothane made some for 2Gs, but they were only the lower (or maybe upper) but not both of them. The metal base plate that holds the upper part of the isolator tend to rust over time, if yours are rusted you should clean them or replace them. I replaced all the parts on mine since I didn't want to take the shocks/springs assembly out anytime soon.

EDIT: If you get quotes from the link that I provided above make sure you tell them that you want the "club member" price. If you don't, they'll give you retail prices for everything.

I think I just might get all the stuff local and be done with it. Napa has the dust boot, and bump stop and bushing kit, but they do not have the cap.
The 41415. I wonder if it will be ok w/o that part.

I wouldn't put everything back together without 41415. That is the metal bumpstop cover that separates the bump stop from the lower bushing. If you can't find that specific part, you cal go to home depot and grab a thick/wide washer to separate the bump stop from the lower bushing.

Without that part the strut will poke up thru. It is a must have not maybe. Where's the old ones?

i went to mitsubishi and ordered everything that i needed because some of the stuff was rusted on beyond saving.

Not it won't. The bottom of the base plate holds the strut (and top part of the springs and isolator) in place. It is just a cap over the bump stop and the dust boot attaches to it.

No it isn't. Part number 41415 sits on the bump that is on the strut. Otherwise the strut rod pops up thru the bushings like he had happen. Put that piece in and it will be fixed.

I just got a new bushing kit and used some thick washers. Problem fixed for now.
I'm going to try and find the cup so I can fix it properly.
Thanks everyone.

As I said before 41415 separates the bump stop and the lower bushing. If you would have said strut rod in your first post instead of strut, I would have agreed with you. 41415 does not hold the strut from popping out, it holds the strut ROD from popping out. ;)
