Ok so iver heard some things about the 7 bolt engine. I hear crank walk is an issue on these motors. How do you know if you have crank walk? Also is there any way to prevent crank walk? Also what is shaft play? And where can i get some aftermarket parts for my soon to be 1992 eclipse GSX? A turbo timer would be great.

Crankwalk is an issue on 2g's. It is not an issue on 99+ 7 bolt engines. Last I checked there was no known cause of it, but lots of speculation. Funniest one I heard was someone dropped a bag of sand in the vat that was used for making the bearings or something.

Shaft play has to do with the shaft in the turbo. In, out, up, down, side to side. You shouldn't have any. A very small amount is tolerable, but tells you it's getting time for a rebuild.

For aftermarket parts, use the navigation bar at the top. There are tons of vendors that support this site, and tons that don't.

Well first of all yes seven bolts are more prone to crankwalk but it is made out to sound alot more common than it actually is. Also this is really most common on 95 and 96 and there is no really way to prevent it it is a flaw in the motor. For parts look at the parts link on the top bar (Parts Catalog - DSMtuners).

Aftermarket parts are everywhere!

Craigslist, vendors on here, ebay, GOOGLE...:sneaky:

Your 92 is MOST likely a 6 bolt anyways. And if it wasnt, I wouldnt even worry about it at all. Check out DSMparts.com

Depends on his build date, I forget when exactly they switched to the 7 bolts. If the OP got really lucky he got one of the few factory 4/6 bolt combos, which is a 6 bolt engine with a stronger 4 bolt rear end.

Crankwalk itself is caused by thrust bearing failure, as to what causes that failure, no one really knows. If you want to be really sure that you don't have a CW'd engine see if the clutch pedal stays depressed during left hand turns, or pull the oil pan next oil change and manually check for play in the crankshaft. When we pulled our oil pan there was easily 1/2 inch+ of play side to side.

First of all, :thumb: Wenatchee! I was just there today and lived there most my life. There are too few DSMs in the Valley. View Profile: slow4g6392tsi - DSMtuners.com is in East Wenatchee and posts quite often on the PNW forum. You might be able to ask for some help if you are purchasing locally. There are a few active East Side guys in the Tri-Cities and out on the plateau. Everything that has been said so far is good info. Also as a general rule, there are exceptions, and easy to see without crawling under to check the oil pan is if the front brakes have a single piston on a GSX or AWD you usually have a 6 bolt. If it has 2 piston calipers then it is usually a 7bolt. The 2 big things that changed in 92.5 is the the 7bolt and "big brakes". Have fun and good luck!

Wow, too much false information in this thread. People need to learn what crankwalk is, what causes it, and why its name has labled the 2G DSM 7 bolt engine. I think people who do the 1g swap to prevent this are wasting time and money and really have no idea what they are going on about. It usually happens when you see someone who did it and then someone else did it and now 1000s of people are doing it to prevent something that they can fix by just doing some internal maintenance to their engine. Misleading information can cause someone to do something they dont need to do!

Yea i am going out of town today to grab the GSX hopefully (5 hours of total driving wooohooo!). Also how can you tell you have shaft play?

take off the intake pipe/filter and MAS, stick your fingers into the turbo inlet and see if there is any play in the shaft...its really not that hard...you want as little play as possible, but a minor amount is alrite...

if you have a ton of play, both in and out, side to side, etc...think about rebuilding it or purchasing another Turbo...

And? . . . What do you have to say?

I am sorry to be blunt. But, many here fail to see where is this 'false information'. Guys swap to the engine that is less prone to crank walk. There has been no definative answer to why the early to mid 7bolts crank walk. The false information is, 'crank walk has a clear preventive solution', to which you allude.

Any supporting vendor is a good supplier of aftermarket parts. There are MANY suppliers. And your best mod is reading through this forum for hours :) . Take a look at the tech articles, dsmwiki, and the 1g/2g upgrade path.

I have arrived home finally... I got the GSX and it is an awesome car! Its completely stock and it still hauls. And i looked at the date the car was manufactured and it was built in October 1991 (its a 1992). So im happy and will put pix into my profile tomorrow! Thanks for all the help!
