I have a 1990 GS Turbo with the LSD rear axle and it has 230,000 miles. Right now the car is blowing blue and black smoke along with a burnt smell from the exhaust. In the engine compartment I can hear a tapping noise in the right most cylinders.

Can I rebuild just that one cylinder with a new piston, rod, and rings along with a new head? Or all of them?

I know a new motor would be the better route but I don’t have the cash to do all that yet.

just read a whole bunch of rebuild threads but no answer.

i plan on buying a remanufactured head and rebuilding that one cylinder.

You CAN just rebuild one cylinder. But it's recommended that you re-build the whole thing. Sounds like your turbo is going out, and that you are getting lifter tick.

i understand now that i've read about the turbos leaking. So if the turbo is going then it would explain the blue and black smoke right? and the ticking it could be what you said valve tick. Could of turned an expensive job into a cheap one. thanks

blue is oil

black is rich fuel right?

would the turbo cause that?

and this car has been sitting for a while too so i understand if it has valve tick.

i did see some smoke coming from the bay too

could i drive the car about 20 miles with a bad turbo?

and... would a bad turbo cause the blue and black smoke?

Thats alot of miles. your valve stem seals (smoke), valves, cylinders, HG, Turbo, most likely all need to be replaced. dont go the cheap route. Thats what gives dsms a bad rep for reliability. do the work and have somthing to be proud of.
