I am going to probably hold off until next spring to get the timing belt replaced along with all the other usual belts, water pump, and pulleys. But my question is this...

Would that be the best time to get bigger cams also? I am not putting any more money into performance this year, I am just going to work on tuning and learn more. But next winter I will need something to learn about and research to get for next spring. (This winter was a lot of reading about the fuel system and dsmlink).

So would that be the best thing to do as long as I am going to do the timing belt next spring? And what cams do you suggest for my setup?

Thanks.

Since you have a smaller turbo I would do the 264/272 or 272/272. Are you using it as a DD with spirit or what? Above the 272 mark you will need springs as well, so keep that in mind. Good Luck

I don't at this point know if I want to try to do it on my own or have one of my friends do it at his shop.

What's the deal then with getting new cam gears?

What and where are the best places to get the cams, timing belt job parts, and cam gears from?

if your going to change cams stick with either a 264/272, or a 272/272 setup. far as adjustable cam gears, they aren't needed when you use bigger cams. They are mainly for fine tuning the motor if you got some major mods. far as doing all of this while you change the timing belt, this is a perfect time to do it since all the more your going to have to do is pull the valve cover off, cam caps, and change the cams. plus if you have any leaky seals on the head you get to replace them at the same time

Er, I disagree with some of this advice.

272's are not that big. When it comes to cams and turbos, the thing you need to look at is airflow. The EVO III 16g can flow significant air. You'll make more power with big cams. I'm running Web cams on a small 16g. Not exactly sure where they fall, but they're at least on par with 272's. I'd go 280's.

Cam gears are a necessity with ANY (ANY) aftermarket cam. You can't degree the cams without them. Even still, degreed cams will likely not perform at the absolute optimum for your particular setup, so adjusting them with give you further gains.

I didn't even bother degreeing my cams, I just took the car to the track and started testing them. I wound up making the car a LOT faster with gears (although it seems Webs have, or at least had, a problem with being ground a bit off centerline).

Edit: By the way, on a stock 2g head, especially if you're running the stock intake manifold, cams are the best way to overcome flow limitations. The stock 2g head will have some trouble breathing regardless, so the more you help it out with cams, the better. I'm pushing about 35 lbs/min out of the small 16g with my cams and stock head/intake manifold. The EVO III 16g is good for at least 40 lbs/min (that's a good gain of airflow). The better the head flows, the less boost you'll have to push.

Does someone have the full list and part numbers and where is the best place to get all the parts and pieces needed for the timing belt job?
