Hi i have a 1990 Laser 2.0 nonturbo the problem im having is since the weather has gotten warmer the engine is getting to much gas you can smell the raw fuel black smoke out the exaust the engine surges then it just wont idle at all . I scaned for codes get non check engine light is off i replace the mass air flow sensor because the car seems to run fine on a cold morning so i thought that may be it no luck . i made the mistake and took it to the local mechanic he said the timing belt was off 3 teeth it must of jumped and i must have a bent valve
i had him reinstall a belt but why if it was a valve would it run fine well better when its cold outside . now get this when i brought it home it was running terible losing power surging i had to stay on the gas to make it go it finally quit i unpluged the mass air flow and it started once the xtra fuel was gone and run pretty well the rest of the way thats why i replace the Mafs but its still running the same so im lost any help would be Great
Thanks fro your time Pat C

I love your run-on sentences. Check for boost leaks. And check your timing. I daresay he did it wrong. If it was off by 3 teeth, your car would not be running. In fact, do a complete tune-up. Sounds like you need one.

LOL that is true. But I love the people that dont read the posts even more LOL he is N/T...

Anyway. sounds like you have an electrical problem with possible your maf system, possibly a poor electrical connection(having more resistance) making the PCM think its reading a higher volume of air then it really is getting.
Another possibility is your Oxygen sensor failing cause your car to run rich. Pull the wires off the O2 and see how it does. I would get that for starters...I dont believe there was EGRs on 1gs but if there is then the problem is definate, density misfire, egr opening at idle... Good luck

hi thanks for your replys it does have an EGR sorry didnt mean to run on just wanted to give a good discription patc

No problem.

If you do have an egr, locate it and pull the vaccum line off of it, this will completely close it and will not let it recirc exhaust gases into the intake, that is if it is partially open. If you can also take it out and clean it because it could have dirt in it, not letting close.

Exhaust gases being dense entering your intake take up lots of space and there for lower the amount of air you have in the intake manifold, this resulting in a very rich mixture and may cause misfires...As well as black smoke

Hi again ok i tryed disconnecting the egr no diferance so i cleaned it still none so i made a blocking plate until i recieved one on order and it ran better still stalled after running for about 20 mins i recieved the new egr today and installed it no change i did notice weld on the exaust manafold could a leak in the manafold cause the flooding ? im stumped thanks for your help Pat C

ok, do you have any tools available vacuum gauge would be nice. Someone posted that if you have more resistance in the mafs wiring the computer would assume a larger volume or air? no its opposite, if you have more resistance the less value... Have someone rev the car and go to the tail pipe and check if your getting a good amount of exhaust pressure/volume comming out. If not possible catalytic converter. Disconnect the vacuum line from the Fuel pressure regulator any difference? do u see any fuel in the vacuum line? Disconnecting the egr would make it run better on idle, but if you are on load it wouldn't make a difference. Also disconnecting the vacuum line to your egr is not gonna diagnose a stuck valve. Whatever that dumb mechanic told you about your timing belt jumping is probably a lie and you should tell him i said that. Get a timing light and check your base timing. Disconnect your O2 sensor like previously stated , its a good idea. Did you get a used or refirbished MAFS? Check out the basics as well to save you some time and eliminate things. Check plugs, wires and so forth. The process of elimination is a tactic of a good technician. Also PLEASE check your grounds for god sakes. Start wiggling the harness see if it changes anything. Take out your idler motor if you have one and clean it. Spray intake spray on it liberally and shoot some lube on it after your done. While your at it clean the throttle body this will help. Does the car start fine?

Hey man,

Before getting out the ohm meter and getting into some stuff that may be above your head; change your spark plugs, wires and air filter. That should have been done before buying a new EGR. Always start with the simplest, cheapest parts and then work your way up. And watch that spark plug gap, take the time to get it exact.

Hi yes when i first encountered this problem i changed plugs, wires ,fuel filter , air filter ,o2sensor , The mafs is new .
It seems to go by the air temp as how its going to run. In the morning when its cool it will run fine w/o a miss for about 5 miles then it starts it stalls at every stop in the afternoon when its warmer it runs bad right from the start . Also starts missing i asume my plugs are loading up i'll have to clean everything again .It has good presure at the tail pipe the guy i bought it from removed the catalytic converter.I've ran it with the o2's disconnected it doesnt seem to run any diferant. I'll try Disconnecting the vacuum line from the Fuel pressure regulator ran out of daylight today . thanks again for all your help and yes i have a vacuum gauge
