Aren't there supposed to be C clips holding the front axles in the outer CV joints? Mine dont' have the clips and I can't find the clips in CAPS, only the clip for holding the passenger side axle in the gearbox.
Where can I find those clips?

I'm not sure what you mean? Do you mean clips that go into the tranny, like that hold the axel in? If so then there is no clip that holds it in they just pop in and out. I just took the motor in and out this weekend so i know

there should be some metal clips.. I forget what they are called.. There has to be something holding it together.. Where is a DSM god when you need em? LOL

Can you post a pic?

There are no clips. The joint is made so that it can only come apart at a hard angle and slipped out. If the axle is installed, then it cannot ever get to that angle and it will stay just as it should, held in place mostly by the knuckle and the slot out of the trans.

Just the boot is held on by a clip, if that is what you are talking about. It's just a CV boot clip that you can pick up at any autoparts store. They likely won't have it on the floor, you'll just have to ask.

Is there not supposed to be a clip that holds the splines of the axle inside the CV joint? I know the joint can't come apart with the shaft inserted but I'm worried the axle can partially come out of the joint, making the splines weaker.

I'll double check my Hanes manual, but mine did not have a clip when I removed it. The axle was pretty well pinned between the knuckle and the trans and I really had to pull it to the side to get it to slip out. There was virtually no play.

The intermediate axle on the driver's side has a bearing bracket that supports it and makes it nearly impossible for that middle shaft to pull from the trans without removing those bracket bolts. Both points that enter the trans have shafts that are long and straight enough that the axle cannot move side to side enough to pull out without removing the attaching point on the steering knuckle or removing the steering knuckle.

There is a C clip that holds the knuckle onto the outer spline of the axles. The boot then goes on over the knuckle, which is also held on by a small and a large clamp. From what I can tell you not all axles will have the C clips but all of the OEM replacement DSM axles Ive worked with have had them. You should be able to get replacement clips at any major auto parts store- they do not need to be axle or DSM-specific, just simply the right size.

holy damn that didnt make sense.. are you talking about the clip holding the inner cv joint to the differential on the tranny? or the c clip which holds the cv joint to the axle itself?
