I am buying a 91 gst. It runs but the computer is bad, huge loss of power. The problem is the car is 4 hours away and i have to drive it home. It has been siting for over a year. My question is what do i have to do.
1. Drain the gas? how?
2. Change the oil?
3. Is it safe to drive with a bad computer?
-he said it runs fine, just not the power it should have
4. Anything else i need to do?

All the help i can get would be great. Thanks!

If you are sure the problem is the computer, buy a used 1 and put it in before you drive it to your home.

If your not sure, i guess its not a problem to drive with a bad computer.

I don't know if the seller know what he's talk about by refer to the huge power loss as bad computer but I'd be sure to check the car out. It may have nothing to do with the ecu. It may be something is up with the the engine.

I don't think I would be too enthusiastic about driving a car that has known problems 4 hours to get it home. Maybe you should look into hauling it home, then you can find and fix the problem without having to work on it in somebody's yard with few tools and little information. just my .02 cents.

I would try to find out what he means by the computer being bad. If it controls a vital part of the car, like the fuel system, something catastrophic could happen to the motor.

He said that the reason why he thinks its the computer is because the previous owner put an Eprom chip in (himself) and didnt do it right. The previous owner said it ran fine untill he did that.

Don't try driving it until after you've replaced the timing belt.

Even if i check it out and make sure its fine? no cracks or dried out? is there some kind of rubber softener i can put on it? It would be a major pain in the @$$ to put another timing belt on, so if i can avoid it i would like too

That is not an avoidable job. Sorry, but if you have no idea how long it's been since it was done last it needs to be done before you even drive it. You will be best off trailering this 1G home then you can do the required maintenance.

Best Bet: Find someone who has a truck you can use if you don't have one. Then rent or borrow a tow dolly. Finally load the car up and tow it home. That way you won't ruin your investment and you can figure out what is wrong with it in your own garage. I NEVER drive cars home I just bought. Who knows what crazy things the previous owner did or did not do to them (i.e. replace timing belt, etc).

+1. Never drive a car you just bought home from that far away, especially one that you know for a fact doesn't even run right.
