Massive oil leak at oil drain

I'm pretty sure its coming from the oil drain. The entire underneath of my car was coated in oil after I put on a replacement turbo. The gasket set came with the incorrect gasket for the oil drain on the turbo end plus one of the bolts seemed stripped on the block end. I know nothing about tapping a hole though.

Am I likely to be able to get by with RTV on the bolt and for a gasket for a couple days until I can get to Mitsubishi to get the correct gaskets? It must have lost a half a quart in 10 miles.
 
NO. DO NOT drive your car. Worse case scenario is your line pops off mid-drive and you dump your oil all over the street and kill your turbo/motor. If you can, park it until you get the correct gasket and use a bit of grey RTV on it next time. Also, if you stripped a bolt, strongly consider retapping it (careful of shaving in the pan, though).
 
You don't by chance know the closest size that I should tap it with do you? I'm kinda grey when it comes to tapping holes and sizes. I read somewhere about retapping it to a stronger standard size.

Take the bolt to the hardware store. Measure its size and thread pitch. But a slightly larger bolt (circumference.. not length). Buy a tap to match the exact size of the larger new bolt. Run tap into hole a few threads back it out. Clean out the shavings. Repeat.... till tap easily goes in and out. The idea is to go slow and a little bit at a time so you can keep the shavings from getting into the oil pan.

Probably 10 minutes max of time to do this. Just make sure the bolt will fit through the bolt hole on the dump tube. If not, you will need to brake out the dremel and grind the bolt hole larger (on the dump tube ... not oil pan) and use a little more rtv around the hole.

One other note... try using a little degreaser around where you want to put rtv. It will help it seal better. simple green, awsome, purple power, etc... just bit to clean off the oil and get a cleaner surface.
 
I drove my 1G 500 miles without any oil and the car survived ( all highway off boost for the most part)...didn't know until I tried to fill it and it pissed oil all over the ground......I cleaned the area and used a little RTV with the old gasket and haven't had a problem since......for the record the motor is coming out this summer for a full rebuild

Huge help, thank you! One last question. Will it be alright if I go from metric to standard? We have a tap and die set in the garage but its standard
 
I would get rid of the stock return line. Weld a 10an weld fitting, and convert over to AN/pushlock style hose. best modification i've done so far :thumb:

On a 420a the Oil oitlet is 3/8 NPT ( national pipe thread). Most oil like kits are 1/8 npt. Go to the hardware store and get a thread repair kit. When you put the pipe thread back in use Teflon paste on the First 2-3 threads and thread locker on the rest. Teflon with make a seal and threadlocker will reduce backing out ( from vibration)

Consider yourself lucky OMG . Not at all recommended though .
