I got my cam gears in today, I showed them to my mech and he tells me that they are both th same... that one needs to have holes to fit a plate.... is this true? I looked at them before I took them to him and did notice they BOTH looked exacly the same..

The plate he is refering to is for a early 2g with the cam sensor on the belt side of the engine. Being a '97, you should not need them as your sensor should be at the oposite end of the intake cam.
