Will I have to drop the exhaust and remove the cross member to get the oil pan off. Or can i fenaggle it off.

I have managed to get an oil pan off without removing the cross-member or downpipe. This is on a 2G however. It definitely is much easier to just remove the downpipe-O2 housing nuts so you can maneuver the downpipe a little bit. Once again this is on a 2G however.

i just got my engine back into my car. you will need to take down the down pipe, and the cross mamberr because you will need to drop it kind of low because of the oil pick up which is inside the oil pan hope that helps

+1 on the way the pickup sits in the pan. There is actually a piece that goes across the inside of the pan that completely surrounds the pickup and you'll need to drop it straight down with very little leeway.

If you take of the O2 housing and remove the bracket that holds the DP up just below the turbo, you might be able to just bend the pipe down at the flex section. This is entirely dependent on the flex section and if it's completely rusted in place like some of the 1g's get (like mine).

If the bolts at the Cat are not rusted up, you might be able to just pop it off there, but once again it depends on the amount of rust and they can be more work than just dropping the entire exhaust by the hangers.

If you can't just unbolt the DP and bend the flex, don't even bother trying to unbolt the exhaust sections, as they're probably waaaaay too rusted to have much hope (I have a 2g that has spent all its years in a very dry climate and was only able to unbolt the sections with the exhaust off the car using a sledge hammer on the wrench...too rusty). Instead, disconnect the front hangers and see if that gives you enough room. I disconnected all the hangers back to the ones in front of the muffler and was able to drop the exhaust, scoot the exhaust out of the way, and drop the pan. Again, this is on a 2g AWD.

no you dont need to take all that stuff off to get the oil pan off.

:notgood: Do not post something that you are not entirely certain about. This could give people the wrong impression and it looks poorly on your input and this site. On a first gen, removing the cross member and moving the down pipe is essential. There is viable no alternative (next to disconnecting the exhaust from the engine and lifting or removing the rest of the engine).
