I am confused on which tuning device to use. Wideband? DSMLink? EvoScan? Chip? Logger

So I am getting pretty far along on my mods and just ordered an Evo Big 16G with the manifold and all that. So I have the setup for somewhere around 300HP.

Now when you read the 2G upgrade path it doesn't suggest any tuning devices when going for the road race setup...although I know its needed.

My question is what is needed? I have been told many many different things, but I don't really need something meant for a 500whp dsm, beings my car is going to be stricly for the road race.

I do have an SAFCII and I also just ordered the 255 walbro and 650cc FIC injectors...also plan on rewire for the pump.

AEM Wideband?
Pocket Logger?
DSM Link? (I hope not I don't have the money for that after all these parts)
Chip? (I have 96 no eprom)
EvoScan + ??

Help me out here guys, as Im sure you can tell I just spent a dump load of money on all these parts so am running out of money here.

Thanks in advance! :talon::dsm::talon::dsm::talon::dsm:

EDIT: I do have a laptop

A wideband is a definate plus. As for dsmlink it would be nice to have but you can tune with your safc also but youll need to get you a logger like pocketloger or something along that line to look for knock (timing retardation). Since you ordered the walbro 255 did you also get an afpr. If not youll probally need to get one also.

Get a wideband without a doubt. I have Dsmlink and it is awesome with all the features. I would at least get an e-prom ecu and chip it. If you don't want to do that you can get away with just the safc but a chip will give you some features and will make it easier to tune with. I would keep the safc if you get a chip so you can make small adjustments as the chip won't be perfect.

Ps, I hope I don't have to be up all night for this thread like your other one.

Get a wideband o2 and you will be good with just the safc. The 2g's timing is not that aggressive so you shouldnt need to much timing control for a good tune. To get the most out of the car though, dsmlink will help.

Ps, I hope I don't have to be up all night for this thread like your other one.
ROFL
No I just said screw it and ordered all the evo 16g stuff, why deal with the stock T25 when I am going to change it anyways, but thanks for all the help ALL NIGHT LONG!! :thumb:

Ok so wideband definately no matter what, and grab an eprom ecu and a chip...how hard is it to install the eprom after I get it chipped? Anything going to get screwed up since I have a 96?

Yeah get a wideband no matter what route you go. I would recommend the chip like I said before, but it is not needed. The ecu can just be plugged in like the one that is currently in the car. Nothing will get screwed up.

i have a similar setup. from what I've read/heard if you go with the safc route a wideband is really helpful and you HAVE to get a logger to be able to tune it correctly it will be hard to tune with the safc and 650cc though. Many people say it can be done and i'm sure it can but it's difficult. From there you can go with a chip but to do this you need to buy an eprom ecu and should ###### keep your safc for fine adjustments. The car should run great with this setup but....to change anything you have to send the chip off and get it adjusted. Then the final stage is the dsmlink. This will give you ultimate control for any future upgrades. I have choose to go this route for money reasons. Here was my thought plan....
tune with safc-wideband (150.00)have to buy a logger (125.00) will be a pain to tune!
tune with chip and safc-wideband (150.00) have to buy a logger (125.00) eprom/chip (400.00)
tune with dsmlink-wideband (150.00) eprom/dsmlink (675.00) sell safc (-125.00)
So between a chip or dsmlink is only a price difference of 25.00 it just makes sense to go dsmlink
Also one more thing to mention is a custom chip is hard to sell but dsmlink will sell in a day IF you ever want to get rid of it! hope this helps

I dont know what wideband you're buying for 150, but it must not be new.. Id go ahead and spend another $100-120 and get a new wideband..

Ive been researching this alot lately and wanted to go with EMS but the small budget so I have decided on the MAF translator Pro with a GM map and IAT. This will be SD tuning as opposed to the slider style DSMLINK stuff.

Also a wideband should not be considered "helpful" as much as it should be "required" kinda difficult to tune fuel with no way of knowing the effects of said tuning. LOL

definetly go for a safc and wideband for 250 bucks .. can get a good tune in it and save alot of cash.. definetly the way to go for 300 hp range.

yeah that was alittle on the cheap side for a wideband but, i bought a brand new aem uego with gauge and sensor for 200 shipped on ebay. so i guess you could bump that 150 to 200
