Their are plenty of threads here and at other websites (dsmtalk) that can help you in a motor build. Just search and look around for good deals. Also if you can wait for some items to go on sale. Determine your goals first, do you want a mild or a wild ride? How much hp do you want to put down? Stock blocks are known to handle in excess of 400hp. Research, research, research (Especially before purchasing an SRT-4)...

It all depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want a RELIABLE street car with some mods and can beat a vette on the weekends, go with a stock rebuild, and delete the balance shafts. The more you stray away from stock the more "unreliable" it gets. But it also depends on the driver as well. Good luck man.

Do you want to buy an already built block? Do you want to make more then 400whp? What is your budget? Are you going to rebuild it or have a machine shop do everything?

So your saying a stock rebuild on the 4g63 can beat a vette.....
Yes, if you have mods done to the car. My car has no problem beating vettes or vipers with the way it is on the stock 90,000 mile engine.

What to buy depends on your power goals. If you want a reliable daily driver then rebuild the engine with all OEM parts including bearings, rings, gaskets, waterpump, etc. If you are looking for higher performance then research the forums for all the parts you have a question about. Either way rebuilding an engine will take some time, tools and experience. If you have enough mechanical ability to change your timing belt then you should feel confident with rebuilding the engine. Have Fun!

Care to back any of this up?

Care to back any of this up?

I have 3 friend's that each own or owned SRT-4's. Each one has had one problem after another, and Chrysler backed out of the warranty on all but one. Anything from tranny's going, to ECU's frying, intercooler pipes cracking, gauge clusters malfunctioning. And each one is now selling or sold their cars and the depreciation value is terrible. These were all pretty much stock cars besides an intake, TBE, and adjustable wastegates set at just above stock boost. Maybe each got a bad apples, I'm not sure. I don't really pay attention to any SRT-4 forums, however I have a ton of respect for them. I have been beaten by many, and they are very capable cars with a decent amount of money...

If he wants a nice, better looking, and cheaper car to fix I would stick with the DSM. Parts are widely available, and easy to come by for cheap. But thats just my opinion...

Ok well before you guys go bashing on the srt-4's this particular one I might get happens to be my uncles who wants me to take over payments...the car was dyno'd at 412 to the wheels...I figure if Im going to spend money on it why not replace factory with aftermarket and make it faster. I dont want to spend thousands making it stock again but at the same time this is my daily driver so it needs to be reliable. I'd be happy with 300 to 400 hp.

Find a decent low mileage stock engine for it, put a 16G with all supporting mods and you have a very capable 3-400 WHP DSM. That will be somewhat reliable with proper maintenance, and the cost to fix anything that breaks wont be insane. Motors are easy to come by for less than $1k, and all the other parts to make it a capable 300hp street machine are fairly cheap, and definitely easy to come by...

The SRT-4 sounds like a decent buy, but are you able to afford the payments?

what it really boils down to imho is car payments suck and what you will end up paying in the long run sucks, so if you spent what you will make in car payments in 1 year on your car you would have a killer dsm in your hands making more HP than the srt4 would by far . do the math then figure out whats important to YOU!!!!!

Thats what I was thinking. I could afford the payments but its going to be a bi*** after a while and I could be throwing that money into the dsm. Where could I find a decent 6 bolt?
