I used a vise and protected the lifter by rags where the vise clamps. Then aligned the side holes and added the paper clip in the hole then slowly turned the clamp 1/8 every turn. The oil slowly oozed out black oil on the side holes. Then when the lifter bottomed out it would fall right off vise. I manually compressed them with my fingers and it compresses like new.

This did not damage the surface and all oil is out.:)
 
Which version lifters are you talking about, 3g or the original? If you are using the original ones with the small orifice I would suggest upgrading to the 3g lifters.
