My son just traded his Jetta for a 97 GSX. Drove it one day and then had to take in to a proformance shop just to find out the motor was blown. Any suggestions on replacing the motor? Would like to keep the cost reasonable as he is 16 and can mod it on his own. It already has an upgraded turbo and ground effects as well as being lowered and sway bars.

Join your local DSM forum(s) and post a "Want to Buy" ad in their Classifieds section. Look for a complete 6-bolt engine in good condition from a trusted individual.

x2 on the recommendation to use your local forum.. I wouldn't trust places like ebay or craigslist for an engine.. A local forum would be the best bet, DSMs are fairly common around here so my local forum is huge.. If you need help finding a local forum I would search google..
Also, you should ask your mechanic what exactly is wrong, perhaps a rebuild would be the best bet, but some 4G63 owners around here would kill for a 6-bolt 1g Engine. :thumb:

my advice would to try an do moderate upgrades while replacing things you may have to replace anyways. now would be a great time for a tougher headgasket, maybe lifters or a mild head kit(i got one with +1 SS vavles with bronze guides and 3g lifters for cheaper than OEM valves), do T-belt/water pump for sure with maybe a BS removal. things to keep the car running healthy and/or might cost more to do later.

if your boy has a few coins stacked up, have em help you out. itll give him a sense of pride and he'll take more care of it. plus if he wants things like cams or whatever- nows his time to shine. tho, i wouldnt recomend upgrades like cams that require more modifications or need your car to be tuned as they will only cause more trouble for a rookie enthusiast or someone whos just starting out. a stock rebuild should be more than enough- what is it like 400whp on stock internals?

If the motor can be fixed (posting specifics would help), I'd let your son fix it. That may be the cheaper option, would give him some good experience, and - as was mentioned - a sense of pride that may keep him from thrashing the car as much. This assumes he has a place to do the work, tools, a bit of knowhow, etc.

Hey
I'm the son who owns the car.
The Engine in it now is the 4g64
we really dont have the tools or the place to do the work here. I cant remember exactly but the guys at AMS said that the issue was with the crank. i went out there and they showed me that it was moving. they said they could put a 99 engine in there for about $5250 w/ labor and they said it would probley be the same to do a rebuild.

Which leads me to a question. Which is goin to be better, a 99 motor (which mitsu fixed the probelm and started making better engine) or to go with an older 1g engine?

There are also small other problems like, the washer fluid lights on, but the guy removed the washer fluid resuvare, the battery and SRS lights blink kinda weird, most of the time, there are random plugs unplugged (under the steering wheel and in dash, and also in engine compartment) and a few other things.

Here are some pics of the car:

Are you talking about crank walked engine? Are you sure it is not the stock 7 bolt 4G63?

Seth

Yea, def. recirculate that blow off valve, thats probably making that car run like shit. At least that white paint looks beautiful. I would think your talking about the thrust bearing crapped out if you saw something on the crank moves? Which would mean that the crank walked on you. I would suggest getting a rebuilt shortblock from Slowboy or Modern Automotive Performance or Buschar and have AMS put it in. AMS is very expensive. See if there are any other shops to do the work, because 5250 is crazy. Like that 50 bucks is really going to make a difference when they are already raping you. :toobad:

It is a stock engine but somthing got messed up with the crank i think. i am not real sure what the deal is with it but i think thats it

and what should i do with the HKS BOV? and y would that make it run bad?

If the hks isn't recirculated, you're letting out already metered air, and fuel is being compensated for the correct ratio, with the metered air causing your car to run pig rich. Search "venting"

5300$$???? you could get a fully built stroker from Slowboy. From your writeup i see that the AMS guys were telling you that your engine cranckwalked.in you case,i would buy a dead 6 bolt engine and built it with stock internals.I bould mines last weekend at JNZ TUNING and they did from bottom to the top sock rebuild for under 2400. you could get a blown 6 bolt for under 500 so your total would be around 3000 $$ ;)

:toobad:$5300 for a new motor and labor:nono::notgood:OMG:mad::(:barf: DO NOT DO THAT....I REPEAT....DO NOT DO THAT

Dude i bought my Fully Built 2.0... Weisco Pistons, Eagle Rods, Knife edged crank... for $2600, I had a guy from off the forums come help me do the swap...and I gave him $400

Dude DO NOT DO THAT....you need to take your time....and look on the classafieds....

Im shocked:toobad:i thought AMS was a good shop....thats really sad....holy shit....:toobad:

Dude...I'll put your motor in and get you a new one for less than $3000....Im telling you....

If you pay that much....it will be the biggest mistake of your life....

So, if AMS would charge that much to do the work and what components you needed, that would put their labor well over 125 dollar/hr assuming that your block would cost you 2600, which it would not. WHICH IS RIDICULOUS!!! I am getting the same set up as the guy above for 1500 with block crank, machine shop work, and all the internals. That is insane.

ITS NOT AUTO (I HATE AUTO) But i have no clue y there is a sticker with shift lock on it......

But ya if anyone sees any great motors out there for a decent price and if anyone knows how to do swaps in the aurora IL area hit me up

i would like to have an engine that is somewhat built up and i wanna try and push at least high 200's to the wheel if possible

If thats all you want. Buy a block, go to extreme psi.com Buy that oem 2g pistons and 1g big rods arp head studs, main studs, cometic head gasket, and take that all to a machine shop in aurora, Il and have them assemble the motor for you. And then take the motor to a reputable shop to put the motor in. Bam, your done.
