hey guys i have a 97gs-t. i was wondering how much horsepower can the stock engine take? At what horsepower range do i have to consider a engine build?

I like to fix things as I break them. Get a blown block and start rebuilding it on the side. when it's done, or push your stock block's limits and it blows, replace it.

I wouldn't push the limits on something I rely on.

thanks i made a list of stuff im getting. its alittle bigger than that LOL. im trying to get a 20g turbo but not have it running its full potential so i dont blow a gasket like u said. but the thing is i heard that people have stock engines and run 400hp+. is that true?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the above statement. If your asking how many horsepower you can have before upgrading the internal components, that all depends on your setup. There are alot of upgrades you can do without touching stock internals, and many of the stock internals are rated to 450hp. There are many threads on this site that give you ideas of what to do and where to tweak. You might want to read the upgrade paths section, will give you an idea of whats involved to get up tp that level.

honestly, right now 400hp for me is too much, not that i cant handle it its just that i dont need that much, im looking for something around 300-350, if this helps heres the list without guages suspension brakes etc.

aight, thanks man, one question you think i should do some work on the head like you said valves, springs, studs? or will it hold together?

If thats the list of mods you got, then you are probaly done buying any parts. Just read as much as you can on these forums and learn the essential stuff. One of the first things you are going to want to do is learn to tune.

I dont know what the guy above was saying, but you do not have to upgrade your internals at 300hp. Someone right now as we speak is running 460whp on a stock 7bolt(completely stock). Many other people have pushed stock internals to this. Also people have pushed 30psi.

For you with your 20g, you can probably reach your goal of 300-350hp, with running no more then 20psi on a good tune. I would suggest doing a compression test and see how your engine is actually doing.

No work on the engine is going to be needed on the bottom end or head if your engine is in good shape.

first its illegal, second, the street drags are not for highway use, you would just tear them up on the highway, a drag strip is someway slick, meaning, it has little to no roughness to it, a regular highway has roughness, bumps, ect, so slicks are useless.

It's all in the tune, DSM Link FTW!! Should be one of your first upgrades if you have decent goals for the car in my opinion. I see that it is, congrats.
