[RESOLVED] screeching and squeling

ok here is the deal. on my 98 gsx.

When i first start the car, it squels ungodly bad. and after it warms up it will continually squel randomly. and at these random times kinda make my lights go dim.

from chasing the problem down here is what i have found.

When i turn the wheel hard it'll squel, when i turn the defrost on it really squels loud, and i turn it off it'll go to a faint squel almost going away.
All the belts are oem and tightened to proper positions. I work at a collision shop so i am well knowledged in this.

Could I have a tensioner pulley thats going bad causing this horrid screech...?
the symtoms kinda leave me believing it's a tensioner pulley or maybe the A/C compressor going out. as when defrost is on the a/c will kick on to.

please lend me your knowledge and or thoughts.

Sounds like you have a loose alternator belt. The same belt runs you power steering. So thats why it would make noise when turning.

check your drive belts. sounds like their loose.

+1 Lose alternator belt.

Easy fix, just had a new alternator put on my car, belt squeels at startup, its just too cold out!! But you don't want to burn up/eat a belt either, get it tightened.

just had a similiar problem. changed the belts. all good for a day, then... my alternator goes out, no p/s, and the car starts to over heat. had to go back in and change the harmonic balancer as it was free spinning. and now weeks later, perfectly fine. check the belts and harmonic balancer then report back.

thanx guys i figured it might be as much. so i will be replacing the harmonic balancer tonight.

One thing you could also check for is the AC tensioner pulley IF its not the harmonic balancer. I know my car has very similar screeching and sqeeking noises and that is currently what is making the noise but I am too broke to buy a new one at the time . But just a suggestion to check into.

sounds like a failing alternator or alternator belt or something with the alternator to me

save yourself a hassle in the future and don't waste money on a stock replacement pulley

same prob on my car, but found out the power steering pump had a sliiight leak on it dripping onto the belt, causing it to squeal..i never saw a spot, so I couldn't figure it out for a while

update:

I overtightened it over the factory spec... whitch may be ok since the belt isn't that new.. by doing this it has cured the screach......

Now i just have to be aware and see if tightening it to this degree will wear down any bearings.. but for now by gosh i am happy and i appriciate yall's help.

My car was doing the exact same thing. All I had to do was adjust the tension on my alternator belt and the annoying noise went away.
