ok so today i tested my maf because i think its toast ( followed the steps in the manual) and the test for terminal 3 fail ( pcm wire) it should have 4.8 to 5.2 v on it and mine had 1v i tested the circuit for continuity and that came back ok. now my question is, does this mean my maf or my pcm is shoot. the car runs just rich i believe ( no gas millage) no boost leaks the vam also failed the test for terminal 5 witch i believe is the chassis ground. it should be rite around 2 ohms and mine was anywhere from 162 all the way up to 300 something. what the heck is wrong wit my car????

If you tested your MAF connector and it failed to match the required specs, then it is likely toasted.

There are frequent modifications that people do to create more airflow, such as removing some of the honeycomb sections. They then use another device, such as an SAFC, to modify the signal the ecu reads to return it to a measurable volume. Testing the connectors may also be at fault if there is corrosion or broken wires.

The other problem is that it might be dirty. Yes, if there is a bunch of crap all over the honeycomb sections then it can seriously mess up the readings, especially if it is a bunch of oil. They do have MAF cleaner at most automotive stores.

ok time to recap got a new maf much better now. but just wondering if my maf was dead( not metering air flow at all) how did the car even run? do these cars have a fail safe or something where if theres a loss of output from the maf the computer defaults to something? just thought it was weird that the car still ran and the maf was bad.. the merkur wouldn't even start if the maf was failing. just wondering so i can understand this car a little better.

My old 2g would start and idle with the maf unpluged, as soon as you gave it gas though it would fall on it's face or stall...
