Welcome , do maintenance first . All of it . Timing belt , water pump , belts , plugs/wires , oil , filters , other fluids .

Most important while you are here . We have rules that are easy to follow . Grammar is a big deal here . Makes it easier to understand your questions . And if you have not filled out your profile , do so now .

This is good advice. It'll give you peace of mind in the long run. Then you can concentrate on making your DSM a performer.

By the way, welcome to the forum. I'm always glad to see more Norcal DSMers.:dsm: Make sure you check out the Norcal page.

In addition to ROOKIE1's suggestions...
  • Plugs should be NGK BPR6ES gapped to 0.028". Don't use anything else.
  • Might as well stop by a Mitsu dealership and pick up an OEM PCV valve. If yours isn't leaking, it will sooner or later. Don't get it at Autozone/Carquest/etc. Has to be Mitsu or it'll leak right out of the box. You'll probably find out that your old one is leaking during a boost leak test...
  • Search on boost leak testing, build a tester, get some form of compressed air (not a bike pump!), do a boost leak test, fix all leaks. It'll get you under the hood and a bit more familiar with where stuff is and what it does. And it'll add (restore) power and improve fuel economy if you have leaks and fix them.
  • I'd recommend a compression test just to see the overall health of the motor. Google "dsmgrrrl compression" for a good link (I'm too lazy to grab the URL):).
  • Check the general turbo health by checking for shaft play (search is your friend).
  • Check your idle RPM fully warmed up.
  • Consider an aftermarket boost gauge and a-pillar mounting pod. Seeing your boost and vaccuum with numbers is cool and useful.
  • If you have a boost/vaccuum gauge, you can check your idle and motoring (clutch out, off the gas, engine is slowing car down) vaccuum levels.
  • Implied in ROOKIE1's "filters" is perhaps the fuel filter. If it's not been replaced, it'd be a good thing to change. If it blocks fuel, you can run lean, and that's bad.
That ought to get you started.:thumb:

I would change my timing belt. It could save you a lot of time and money. Good luck and have fun and be safe.

One thing not to over look is the fuel injectors, if the motor has high miles it does'nt hurt to change them while you are under the hood. And welcome to the forum!:thumb::dsm:

When I first got my 2G it would drive and idle rough. But after changing the plugs and wires it's always driven smoothly. May I suggest the Magnecore KV85 plug wires. They're a little more expensive but I've had better results from them than any NGKs.

check what people have said above ,,also check your motor mounts ,cvshafts ,buy a new fuel pump ,,get her running good befor you start to play ,,ck shocks ,brakes

Recently I purchased my first turbo dsm, and had more or less the same question that you do. Basically what I did is:

Change spark plugs, spark plug wires, water pump, timing belt, balance shaft belt, timing belt tensioner, fuel filter, thermostat, pcv valve, a few idlers, and ALL the water hoses[If they are rubber, you should change them]

Another thing to consider could be brake pads, and definitly an oil & filter change. This should keep you busy for a while. Some of the things on the list are what we call "cheap insurance." Its better to waste a few extra dollars and make sure you've done a complete tune-up.

I second what kenamond said about the leak tests. I personally have not done this yet, because I had some extra problems because the previous owner did no maintainance and left me a messed up engine, but once I have it, this is something I will definitly do. Hope this helps.

hey thanks a lot sorry about the grammar i have a bad habit of trying to type fast and not read what i just wrote but thanks again
