Do I really need a MAP sensor?

Ok so im resorting to building a talon. I have alot of money into it and have come to the point where its time to upgrade the intake manifold and I am going with a JM fab SMIM. they give me the option to have the stock MAP flange welded on and I was wondering if this is something "I Need". any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

I am sure there is a way around it, but I dont kno how to go around it. I would suggest having the flange put on there. It isnt going to hurt anything if you have it.

FYI: in case you dont know the MAP is what is used to determine the load on the engine. As I read earlier someone thought it was for EGR, well its not. Just FYI.

Wrong. Maybe right for other cars, not this one.

The MDP sensor is a failsafe. If the stock MAF ever fails, the ecu uses the MDP sensor to calculate airflow so you'll be able to drive the car somewhere to get fixed. I guess it's a good idea to have it but I chose differently after my 6 bolt swap. I just kept it plugged in and wire-tied it underneath the intake manifold.

I am confused now. MAP= Manifold Absolute Pressure. When I went through schoolthats what they said it was for, and after you said that I looked back in my books from school and that is what they say. If thats not whats its for than what is it for? And the book I am useing is a ASE NATEF book.

can you run a gm 3.3 bar map sensor in its place. I have one of those and a pigtail, if you can i need a link on how to wire it up i got sold a jmfab sheet metal intake without the provision for a stock map.

The vehicle gets airflow information from the MAS. The MDP sensor (which is similar in function to a MAP sensor) is only used to check for operation of the EGR by monitoring changes in vacuum when the EGR valve opens.

edit: damned old threads.
