I have a 91 awd talon and its an auto. I bought it with a bad tranny, so the seller thought. I researched it and found out the tcus go bad. So i buy a used one and put it in and it shifts fine. The next day limp mode.

I remove the purchased tcu and pull the cover and the big cap has leaked and made a pretty nasty burn on the board. I then took apart the tcu from the car originally and it looks new!
So my question is what do i test on the tcu to confirm what needs to be fixed. Can the cap be bad, i just cant tell?

I really need this tcu and i cant post in the classifieds because of rules here so guys help me fix this or find me one! md750092

Unlike the ECUs, the TCU have the tendency for the regulator to fail when the cap goes and pump 12v out onto the 5v rail. That usually cooks everything.

About 90% of the TCUs that were showing up were toast because of it but you couldn't tell if it was going to turn out that way until after spending the time repairing it. It was getting too expensive to work on them.

With the TCU the time to replace that cap is before it fails.

BTW IC2 is the port expander that interfaces the EPROM to the CPU. Lower left in the last picture.

Where do i test for 5v? To see if its 12v and cooked. Also i have a tcu that hasnt been fried but dont work, could you take a look at that one?
