This is my first post on this site, however that does not mean I'm new to it. About a month ago a picked up a 95 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD, ever since then I've been reading through numerous forums to educate myself on these cars. Recently I found out the turbo on my Talon was shot. So the past week or two I've been looking at all different types of turbos to see which one I should get. The car is stock but I have plans to modify it as money comes in. I've read lots of posts about 16g turbos. I found a few that said that 16g turbos (all three) were direct bolt-ons, but when I look at buying them an install kit is recommend. So what I want to know is if the small 16g, big 16g, and Evo III 16g are direct bolt-ons? Thanks in advance.

It means that the 16G will bolt directly to the exhaust manifold and o2 housing, and the compressor inlet, oil drain/supply, and coolant lines are all in the same location.

Your car came stock with a Garrett T25, and you'd be replacing it with a Mitsubishi 16G....two totally different turbos. The compressor outlet is in a different location, and the oil supply line is different between the two turbos. Aside from that, all of your existing parts are useable....it will just take a little bit of creativity if you choose not to purchase an install kit (slotting the oil drain flange holes, running your intercooler piping.)

Yes, its a direct bolt-on. Even more so for the 1g's. The 2g dsm's need a install kit. Its pretty much a j-pipe, gaskets, and some oil lines. I believe there are ways to modify one of your oil lines, so all you would need is a j-pipe and gaskets, and either the oil return line or oil feed line. You can piece this kit together yourself and probably get it cheaper.

If you want a direct bolt-on so that you dont have to buy a install kit, you could go with the t-28.

The install kit is for the oil and water feed/return lines and various gaskets. The reason for this is because the stock turbo on 2g's is in a different turbine housing(so the existing feed lines will not fit). You must get the install kit or your turbo will not have any oil or water going into your turbo. But other than that it will bolt directly on.

I've done budget 14B installs on 2G's and reused the existing oil drain (slot the upper holes), coolant lines, copper washers (I know you shouldn't but the customers had no money and I wasn't doing them any favors!), and manifold / o2 housing gaskets.

If you're super-cheap you could pick up a nice used 14B for under $150, find a j-pipe on eBay for $30, oil supply line for $20, and for under $200 you could have a reliable replacement for a T25.

I know you didn't ask, but if I may offer an opinion on the turbo. If you are planning on getting a 16g then get the EVO III version. There are guys (ShapeGSX) running 11's with that turbo and I run the same turbo. (No 11's yet) It will take quite a bit of supporting mods to get into the 11's with it, but the turbo hits hard as hell and I've gotten 41 lb/min airflow out of it. Good luck with the upgrade. :thumb:

The plain big 16G and EvoIII 16G are identical with the exception of a lighter compressor and turbine on the EvoIII (helps it to spool about 100rpm sooner) and a better flowing exhaust housing.

No offense, but if your quest is 11's there are TONS of other turbos available that will get you there much easier than raping a 16G for all it's worth.

I'm planning on the Evo III right now. I found a pretty good deal in the classifieds. As for my plans for the car, 11's are in the back of my mind. I just want to get this thing running solid first and go from there.

Excellent! Glad to hear it. Yeah, 11's are a stretch, but definitely reachable. They are in the back of my mind too, I just know I can reach them in the future. I could have got a 50 trim, but that was a yr ago and I didn't know what I know now. :D But since some guys make great times with a turbo that hits full boost around 3000 rpm, I'm in! Good Luck getting it running strong. I am in the process of my 2nd 1g rebuild, so I can appreciate all the work you are doing. :thumb:

May I ask which other turbo's are considered "bolt-on" /w install kit or not..

I assume the 14b,16g,18g,20g,also the gt25,gt28,gt35,gt45. I'm looking for something in the 20g class of turbo, what are my options?
