I have been reading some old posts. Trying to get a good idea of what tranny upgrades would be best. I don't have a tranny to rebuild yet, so this is just research. I am trying to just come up with a priority list. I am imagining it to be for a 300hp car, but would like to build for 400hp. Might as well be safe. I don't know if it'd be a 2g or 1g. So maybe someon could give advice for each. I'd love to see a taller 5th gear as well. This would be more for autocross and road courses, less for drag. I am assuming a double synchro 2nd would be smart.

Either way, if anyone could prioritize a shopping list, I'd love to see it.

If you dont have the car, I would pick that out first. The money you put into a nice tranny maybe needed for maintenance. Youre not going to look too cool on the side of the road with a nice expensive tranny and a 100k mile snapped timing belt.

Prioritize.

Actually this is why I am researching this. Right now my plan is to priotitize a quality tranny build and an engine internals build. That way I prioritize my money on the run long parts and less on the go fast parts. I'd rather brake the bank building a good shortblock, head, and tranny, than on a cold air intake and catback...

And yes, I was thinking about doing it myself. Not because it's cheaper, but because I just want to:thumb:

Sounds like your head is in the right place man. Im actually starting early on looking for a good tranny. My question is what experience do you have in the tranny rebuilding department? :) Im sure its not a walk in the park for an old newb like myself.

I don't have much trany experience. This is why I want to tackle it. After doing enough engines you get to the point where it's time to move on. I figure as long as you have the correct tools and instructions/mentors it shouldn't be too hard.

Sounds good to me.

I would make a budget of your shortblock/tranny parts and labor, then DOUBLE it. Yes, I know its a cliche, but believe me youll need extra money somewhere for the parts. If you dont, the time when you realize you actually NEED something, you wont have the money.

Once you have that set, put the money aside so you cant spend it on anything else, then start building. Once the money is set, its ALL labor intensive and stress. :thumb:

Just throwing it out there, but I haven't actually gotten suggests yet... but the conversation has been excellent.;)

And just to add to the topic, if I didn't mention earlier, what parts would I most likely not need to change if it were a 2g tranny instead of a 1g? And can you swap a 2g tranny on to a 6 bolt easily? I am assuming it'd bolt right up.

Translab has some stuff to rebuild yourself. Depends on what you want to replace, but were very reasonably priced. As to 2g trans in 1g, I'm not real sure there the same. I think you need an adapter, but don't quote me on it.

You need to get new gears 1-4, new syncro's, double on 2 gear, all new bearings and seals, 4 spyder diff, and if you can new intermediate shaft. if you can , check and replace even 5 gear. And also have some sort of cryo treatment, if you can. It is not cheap, but totally worth it over time.Plus you don't know how powefull your car will be next year.

First of all is maintanance, as a car is no good if it's dead. Secondly, you may want to look into budgeting for parts that exceed your goal to accomodate for any unexpected yearnings down the line, and make the car more reliable. Lastly, you definitely need wtff (what the F funds), as something will ALWAYS come up and require an extra little bit of cash.
