Ok but the thing is, mine isnt lining up. I have a 2g starter on a 1g tranny/TC. But the starter wont engage the TC, it just spins. I just put a 6bolt into my 97 and was re-using as much as I could, so I used the starter I had, a 7bolt. ???????

You make something wrong i have 1990 awd tranny with 2G fwd strarter everything go fine.
Just you make something wrong or your starter it's not working.

have ## starter tested, make sure the gear is moving out when engaged. sometimes the motor will spin, but it may not be pulling the gear out .

Yes just remove the starter and take your car battery out of the car more easy for you.
And connect the negative wire (ground) to the battery (-) and the positive wire to the batery (+) And you will se if it's working or now.

there is a difference between the awd and fwd starters (flywheels are different sizes) and i believe the auto and 5spd's are different two

the reason why it just spins is because ## using a fwd starter on a awd. the flywheels are different sizes fwd(11inch) and awd(10.5). .he half is enough to not engage at all

is your car fwd? It sounds like you used an awd six bolt flywheel in a fwd transmission.

The awd six bolt flywheel has a slightly smaller outer diameter. This means that the positioning of the bell housing has the starter too far to the outside, and the starter teeth will not engage the outer ring gear of the too small awd six bolt flywheel.

Count the teeth of the flywheel ring gear. 110 is fwd. 106 is awd. These numbers are the same for 1g and 2g.

Here's a picture of the difference. I chalked on my workbench "FWD" on the left and "AWD" on the right. Notice the way the ring gear is set differently? The AWD ring gear is in the middle so to speak, while the FWD ring gear is closer to the top.

Here's another picture of an upper view, still fwd on the left and awd on the right.

If you have a wokring starter and a broken starter, I'm pretty sure you can take the pieces off the working one and replace the worn out pieces on the broken one. I did this with nearly new starter from my 94 Diamante, parts car. Brush assembly and solenoid are identical. Cost me zero and it has worked flawleesly since then. I think Mitsubishi only made a few variations of the same starter in the 90's.
