I Have a 97 tsi and i'm about to rebiult the motor and tranny, the car has 130,000 miles. I'm looking towards 400-500 horses. After sitting down and talking with some Dsm friends I could use some advice on whether to keep my 7 bolt or swap it out for a 6 bolt. Is there a chance that my 7 bolt is good? i mean it has no crank walk at 130,000 miles. if i do keep my 7 bolt is there enything i can improve to make it not crank walk? or is 6 bolt the only way to go?

first off, there are already plenty of thread about this topic.

second, six bolt motors are stronger stock than a 7 bolt. Most people that are going for those numbers are going to go with a 6 bolt. There is obviously more work in doing a 6 bolt swap but there are plenty of do-it-yourself threads to help you along the way. If your going to take the engine out either way and you dont mind the extra work, do the 6 bolt swap. I wish I would have with my car.

Go 6bolt. I have seen people spend 1000s of dollars building up a 7bolt simply because its what they have infront of them, then see it crank walk down the road. Although crankwalk has been eliminated, the 6 bolt has never had a problem with it so why even take the risk? read the link above my post.

6bolt swap would deffinetely be worth it if you have some mechanic work expirience it won't be that hard. I have the swap done in my car and I did it myself. You can also find alot of help here on the forums

go with the 6 bolt. The swap is only a few more steps, it's simple. Just because you dont have crankwalk now doesn't mean that you wont get it when you start turning up the boost and doubleing the hp.

as a couple of memebers have stated this subject is overkill there are plenty of threads that examine the positives and the negative of both motors all it takes is that search button, im not trying to flame you but trying to inform you, and my opinion on the matter is that there are numerous setups, like 2g head on 7 bolt block, 1g head on 7boly block, etc. your best bet is to rebuild what you have instead of going 6, pistons, rods, bearings, arp most def and have a nice 7 bolt shortblock.
well goodluck
