Hey im getting ready to purchase dsmlink, and i found a brand new Accer laptop for really cheap, but the problem is that you have to have the DB9 hook up or something along those lines, and this laptop doesnt have that hookup. Is there any adapters or anything that i could use to make it work? oh and also my car is a 1992 talon, and im getting the socketed version of dsmlink. thanxs

DSMLink - FAQ

- My laptop doesn't have a serial port. What can I do?

If your laptop is missing a compatible DB9 serial port, you can find good USB to DB9 serial port converters on the net fairly cheap. These seem to work well from the reports we've gotten from our users. The only one we've tried is the Keyspan adapter P/N USA-19HS, which worked flawlessly in our testing and should be available from your local CompUSA or equivalent.

It is also possible to use one of the PCMCIA serial port cards; I use that on my newer laptop for connecting to my pda as well as DSMLink. I do prefer using an older laptop that I have with a built in serial port for tuning since there's less connections to fail (not to mention it gets better battery life than the new one!).

ok thanxs guys, im getting this new accer for onl 200 and its brand new, i work at wal mart and im getting a big discount:), but lets say i get it, would it be ok to use it around the house also and maybe download some music on it and all, and then put it in my car when and tune wiht it also, i think it has a gig of ram so i would be ok wouldnt i?

For dsmlink a gig of ram is plenty. I'm running my dsmlink software on an old Compaq Presario laptop that has 512m of ram and only a 456MHz processor. The software runs perfect on my ancient comp.

ok thanxs, so u think it would be ok to mess around wiht and tune my car like download a couple song s and all?

It shouldn't be a problem at all. DSMlink isn't to demanding on the laptop. Just keep it virus free like any computer and it should work fine. And when you are actually logging runs don't have media player running music or something, it might not cause any slowdown to the data stream from the car but why chance it.

Anyone know where i can grab a keyspan adapter locally? i checked out best buy, circuit city, radio shack etc to no avail. I would love to pick one up tomorrow because i'm impatient and hate waiting for stuff to arrive in the mail :(

That's a blower, i'm really antsy about dsmlink and i don't feel like waiting. I heard some of the cables form Best Buy work so i'm going to check those out. I looked up walmart's website and they do infact sell the keyspan adapter, unfortunately not in their stores... Just for a heads up however, Dynex brand adapters do not work, and for 40 bucks i don't know why the hell not.

You should just get the keyspan thru link. It's the one they recommend, they provide it CHEAAAAP and it's free, fast shipping.

Stick wit the Keyspan. It's the one DSMlink recommends, and if I'm not mistaken the 1st gens are quite picky when it comes to the adapters. I got mine from eBay if it helps you any... Good Luck!

A good little road trip nothing to big and way better than waiting for it in the mail but I would definately call before going there and make sure its there in stock :thumb: this thing isn't cheap either $130 , damn might as well give em my first kid LOL

Ok.. i'm a little slow this morning but i should stilll be able to find the Keyspan adapter ordering infor on dsmlink.com...anyone want to just give me a hint? Still on my first cup of coffee :(

It's on their FAQ page about the 5th item down.

:edit: Sorry, I didn't realize you were looking for ordering information I just skimmed the post. Good luck finding one. If that doesn't work you could always just spend $50 on e-bay for an old laptop and leave it in your car for tuning.

Yea that's what i was thinking, oh well i'm off to Best Buy to do some testing! I know they have at least one cable that will work, they have to...
