Well I guess someone had to be the first. Went to get the Laser smogged today and as of 01/01/08 they have a new check. along with the gas cap they now check the whole vapor return system. They check the carbon cannister then plug the tank line and then put a new do-hicky on the tank filler and check the system for leaks.

To get to the line with some semblance of ease we had to pull the battery. So if you have not pulled the stuff don't if you have round it up and reinstall it.

I'm not sure if it is just OBD1 cars or if they are hitting the OBD2 cars also. (I saw a 02 FORD go through and they did not do it)

By the way the $400 Laser passed with flying colors :thumb:

So is there anywhere in cali that doesn't have smog?
Like here in phoenix we can register cars in Tucson and not have to deal with that crap.
I assume there is no place in cali like that? Its usually a smaller city or town.

well, this is an interesting page for the cali folks..
only problem is do we have relatives that live in these change of ownership areas? :D

btw, did you get the name of the test? I looked for anything new in smog testing procs and didn't see any.
I'm a bit confused as well with what they had to attach to under the battery. I know there is that vapor canistor under it, but did they have to make a direct connection? isn't that a pita to get to? I know they tested my gas cap last time, but that wasn't a big deal.

They had to clamp off the line going back to the tank with a big pair of needel nose plyers taking the carbon cannester out of the loop to make sure the vent system is intact.

I might be mistaken (which I probably am) I think it was Fuel EVAP test.

It is indeed the Fuel Evaporative System leak test. Basically it pressurizes the EVAP system with a low pressure and checks for any leaks; similar to what they do with the fuel cap except it's for the whole EVAP system. Almost every machine actually asks to perform the test already, but since it hasn't been a state mandated test until recently, there's little reason to buy the expensive equipment or to go through with it. Definitely something to look forward to in my upcoming Update Course. :D

Is it for OBD1 only or are the OBD2 cats going to be hit with it? God help you trying to find all the nooks&crannies they have those cannesters buried.ROFL

My guy was asking me where it was on the E/L/Ts

It's going to be for both OBDI and OBDII cars. I have a hard enough time figuring out how to check timing on some of the older cars (like the mid-engined Toyota minivans) and honestly, this is the last thing I need. :D

Well, the IM240 test has been around for quite some time, its just that most states didn't implement it. Its a 5 way gas analyzer test to measure the emissions coming from your engine through your exhaust, and they are supposed to check your entire EGR/EVAP/PCV system, basically your entire fuel/emissions systems. Regardless of the year make and model, its EPA/DOT etc... And its not just for vehicles with a vacuum emissions operating system, its for electronic ones too, they'll just have to get the right equipment in and properly test them, but by that time, they will be ASE certified technicians doing the emissions tests. Some states have you take your car to a state certified emissions test site, I know for a fact in Indiana and North Carolina they do this.

A friend of mine recently took his 2000 civic in for emmisions, hes got an OBD1 engine/harness/ecu swap, the obd2 port and they couldnt get it to talk back(haha)
So the super just came over and swiped his card and passed it !

Nice guy he could have just as easly said go visit the state referee.

wow, so i guess $14.50 for an inspection is a bargain, and they didn't even pop the hood. good thing too, no emission at all and a full HKS Carbon Ti with no cat would have been bad news :) . they are getting closer though. the capital is the closest city that already requires smog testing, and there is a nice fine for those that get their cars inspected outside the county.
