I am looking to change the cams and cam gears in my car. I have a 96 5-speed talon turbo. Pushing 20-25 lbs of boost. Which cams and cam gears would benefit me the most?

I just updated my profile as much as I could for now. As far as exhaust, there is no exhaust at all. I am going to install an exhaust on it before I install the cams though. I don't like the no exhaust, unless someone can prove to me that it is better. The guy I bought the car from was trying to tell me it spools up quicker as is.

Proof

No one can tell your which cams you need because you've stated no horsepower goal. With that said, your setup can't support more than 450whp, in which case you'll never need more than 272s/fp2s/272regrinds.

There are plenty of cars running 11's with stock cams, and Pat Donaldson drove a former Curt Brown 1G TSi AWD to a 10.33 @ 131 using an FP EvoIII 16G @ 27psi and a pair of HKS 264's (454 AWHP) http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drag-strip/262203-new-evo-iii-16g-record-et-no-no2.html

I have Crower 272's in my AWD, and an HKS 264/272 combo in my FWD. There is a more noticable amount of off-boost torque lost with the straight 272's over the combo....and both feel slower off-boost than stock. But once boost hits, you better have your seatbelt on. :D

I have hks 264...If you want a car that doesn't really have any idle lope they are good, although i think i will be upgrading to 272 or 280 here soon. the 264 just dont have enough performance but they have great driveability

FP2's (Forced performance's 272 cam) don't lope at all :)

I have an Fp Green, and ran Comp 100100's in my car. Ran like stock, but gave me that little bit up top that the stock cams didnt offer....

An evo 3 turbo running stock cams is fine and dandy, but when there is a bigger turbo involved, a bigger cam is always better.

I'd also suggest HKS cam gears as they are $300 set, and they are usually that much for one!!

bullshit no lope, LOL you can hear my license plate rattling right as I come around to the front. However, my idle is pretty freaking good, I got footage in that video of the idle speed.
Edit: This is with b16g and 272/272 Brian Crower Cams... Ill get a vid with the Frank 4 on soon enough.

Thanks for all of the input. I was thinking of a smaller cam to help low end since mine sucks. Sounds like everyone is saying bigger cam for top end. I've only had this car for a few weeks so I am trusting you guys on this stuff. Where is the best place to purchase the Bryan Crower Cams as far as price goes?

Ebay has them for $320 shipped. That is a hard price to beat. You could always try to find some used ones to save a penny or two.

Also, I read with the 272/272 Brian Crower Cams, stock spring retainers are ok with this setup? Is this true or should i change them?

I think I'm going to pick up some bc 272's! Can't beat the price, hks are over 300 dollars more!!

im not running lean at idle, my dsmlink fuel trims are within 1 percent of 0 and hold pretty steady. The wideband reads a little lean at idle due to an exhaust leak, as soon as you are cruising on the highway at elevated rpms, it levels out to around 14.8. My front o2 isnt dead and as far as I figure if dsmlink fuel trims are almost dead on, I cant be running that lean.

Edit: PS thats at 820-840 rpms. At plus 900 rpms it is dead smooth.

Your 02 voltage cycles at idle?

Mine idle smooth all the way down to 500 rpms :p . I have fp2xs. They have a higher ramp rate than 272s. But I've personally heard fp2s and hks 272s idle very smooth at 750 rpms. There's perhaps a miss every 10-12 seconds.

I'd check into some 272 or fp2 sized cams. The 280s provide alot of room to grow, but it will also make it less streetable.

I'm running 264/272 on the 16g and Web cams on the 60-1. There's a huge difference in the idle and drivability between the two.

That's a pretty crazy idle for 272's, I agree that something isn't right there. You might want to check your cam timing. It seems like an exhaust leak that causes the wideband to read lean at idle is going to cause the wideband to read lean at cruising speeds as well. Have you done a boost leak test lately?

My buddy's 2G TSi has BC0101's (272's) also and it idles identical to that vid. We've tried leaning out the AFC a little and it helps smooth out the idle a bit, but then it also raises the idle to 1200 or so as the car warms up.

I am one of the few that have Web Cams 546/547 and they are great. Web Cams have been known to produce a bad batch. But, I would not forget about Web Cams. They have a nice idle between 700-900, sound great. Pull hard when boost kicks in.
