I want to remove the hump in the back of my 1g but i heard that the gass tank could be under there. I know this guy who had it done he said all he did was use a edge grinder or some sort and cut it out and there was metal under there witch meant he didnt have to weld or anything like that. I looked in the hole where the screw for the spare goes and im not shure if theres metal under there could anyone please tell me what i have to do in order to remove the hump. And what are the procedures when cutting the hump out and filling in the hole? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks:dsm:

i cut the hole out of my old 90 and mounted a fuel cell in that location.

i used a 4.5" grinder to cut it out.

if you plan to cut that hump out. i recommend removing the gas tank first. ;) and yes the gas tank is under that hump

why are you cutting it out?

you could pop-rivet a piece of alluminum over the hole and put some silicon to seal it.. then maybe carpet over the rear area

not a bad idea, to put something over the remnants of the "hump" once it's removed... i've been thinking about either taking it out or paying someone to do it for me. i think it would both look better, and provide more storage space without the spare. and if i have plans for a road trip, i could rig some sort of screw-in thing to hold the spare to the plate that was attached. hmm...

yea, any info on this would be appreciated!!

I hate that oogly lumpy bastige!!

Cant put anything flat in there. I want to take it out and put a flat piece of something in there with carpet on it, make it look stock.

i always wanted to ask this question. i have seen this done. a guy has a 2g and he had a system all set up nice in the back. i asked him about it and said he cut it out and welded a piece in there. i am going to find him this summer and ask him about it. i hate the hump i cant lay my amp down in the back and have to have the box right up against the back seat

The hump in question can be seen at http://www.89proof.com/pics/talon/originals/talon055.jpg - and - http://www.89proof.com/pics/talon/originals/talon056.jpg - sorry for the large file size. I'm in the process of removing said hump in my 91 TSI AWD. Going to fuel cell w/ relocated sump and pump. If you guys can wait a few days, I'll take pictures of the whole 'hump removal' process as it goes and post them on my site. I'm working on dropping the stock fuel tank right now and then I'll be digging in with a plasma cutter, but a grinder would accomplish the same thing. Let me know if interested.

can you cut out that hump and keep the stock fuel tank??

That is what i want to do. Then cover the bottom of the trunk with a hard piece of something covered in grey auto carpet. Looking stock, with more room for crap :)

I'll let you know tomorrow. Gas is siphoning out overnight and tank will get dropped in the morning. If the tank doesn't hump up there and you are able to cut the floor out, I'd suggest getting a flat piece of aluminum and some caulk and riveting the aluminum plate to the floor. You can usually buy old street signs at metal salvage yards for cheap - or use one of the ones hanging around that you stole already. Best to keep moisture out...

(89PROOF) What are you really trying to do in those pic's ? If your trying to make the car light i think the mission was accomplished. The last thing i did after gutting the whole back section of my car, was take out the tar matting like you did.:D Other than that i really want to see someone in the process of cutting the huge hump out of the back. If theres anyone with pic's post them. Any pic's or help would be appreciated.:thumb:

Yeah I went overboard with the weight reduction on this car. Maybe the tranny will last a little longer with a couple hundred less pounds to get moving...

ok, thanx :)

yea I was planning on covering it with a piece of metal before I make the cover.

I don't think you're going to be able to cut out the hump and retain the stock gas tank. Unless you're planning on doing some extensive modification, that is. The tank has the hump in it too. Unless you're going to invest in a fuel cell or carve the hump out of the tank and plate it back together too. If you do decide to drop your tank, be advised that it doesn't come out easily and you're probably going to break something in the process. I sheared a total of 6 bolts and broke a fuel line, plus had to cut off 2 rubber hoses. Post pics soon.

a very good question, id like to know for sure myself, the hump is only in AWD 1g's. I allways thought that the rear-end was under it, but if there is nothing but flat metal you can bet its gonna be removed. there is hardly any room for a decent system back there. :dsm:

Wasn't this just discussed like two days ago (not being rude, I just swear I read about this the other day)? You can't remove it on a 1G unless you use a fuel cell. Why? That hump is on the gas tank as well. I don't know why but it is.

Hello! I am putting an amp rack in my '90 Talon TSi AWD this weekend (the gold one in my sig). I have figured out how to work around the spare tire hump (there will be no spare tire mounted there) but it would be REALLY nice if the hump was not there. Findng ways of taking it out is not the problem...I am afraid there is something inside the hump that should not be disturbed. Anyone know what's "in the hump"? :p Thanks!

I've been wanting to do the same thing for a while but I never did. My damn sub is all over the place when I go around corners. So?

ANYTHING is removable. Think plasma cutter (remove gas tank first) or sawzall. A BFH won't cut it. Cut the hump out and reweld a flat sheet of metal in there to keep moisture out.
