first off id like to say i LOVE this site. ive owned a 97 Nonturbo for about 2 years and have always wanted a 4G63 after that.. I finally picked myseld up a 91 Eagle Talon TSI AWD 5-speed for 500 bucks about 2 weeks ago and immediatly came here to start searching/reading/learning/knowing the proper way to upgrade these fun cars.. (starting with maintenence)

Ok.. so i was about to leave somewhere.. jumped in the car, started it up.. its winter out so i had to clean some windows off before hand, but i always let the car run while i do that, just to let it kindof pre-warm.. anyways, much to my surprise, i start hearing a noise coming from the engine.. i pop the hood and give it a good listen and i hear a noise coming from the timing assembly, i think.. so, i immediatly shut the car off, run back upstairs grabbed my camera and included this video with it because i want to know if you guys have heard this before (I know at least ONE of you has! haha =] ) and know what it is.. thanks in advance..

I wouldn't know exactly what it is.. Hopefully someone with more knowledge could chime in.. But it sounds like it would be a belt over there snapped:thumb:.. Kinda sounded like my honda when my timing chain went!.. (except 50x's more ricey)... But I would definately recommend not starting it anymore till you find out exactly what happened because it really doesnt sound good!

:dsm:Personally, I would start feeling around the engine bay just to see if there may be anything loose that might be smacking something else while the engine is running. Check all pulleys to see if they are tight and maybe pull the top cover off the timing belt housing to see if anything might be out of the ordinary. If all else fails, get someone that knows a little more than you to take a look at it and see if they find anything. I might just be something stupid that nobody would think of. Start with that and let us know how u make out so we can give you better ideas. Good luck

it sounds like your timing belt tensioner went bad.. that in turn would make your belt slap around inside your cover and make all kinds of noise.. i would pull the cover and make sure all looks good inside.. and since you have the cover off, replace the timing belt, balance shaft belt, and tensioner, when these go bad and let loose,,,,,, new head time!!

Check your crank pulley, kind of sounds like mine did when it went bad.

Definitely sounds like it's pulley or belt related. Check the belts, also the pulleys specifically the water pump/crank pulleys.

what everyone is saying makes sense...rule out small easy fixes first, the way you can better diagnose the issue....like said in an above post, it could eb something really stupid...

thanks everyone.. i went ahead and decided to pull the front of the engine off because i was really worried about it.. i was planning on doing the belts soon anyways so i took it to the shop and decided to do it.. and boy was i glad i did.. i found myself looking at a decent timing belt (good tension) and a broken balance shaft belt.. talk about luck! i'm surprised it didnt take the timing belt with it.. that would have been just my luck! so i guess i'm gonna do a balance shaft eliminator kit because i couldnt even tell a difference with the belt broken, i could use the extra horsepower, and its just one less thing to worry about..

thanks for the suggestions so quick tho :)
