Okay heres what I have encountered, and since this is the first time I've really done much work on any Mitsubishi other than oil change here and there. Back to the problem. I recently bought one of them Ebay cold air intake dealywhoppers and have been bugged by the infamous check engine light after I hooked it up, and figured that maybe the thing I unplugged would have something to do with it and sure enough I hit the hammer on the head so for the time being until I can get some wonderful advice I have rigged the old filter holder and filter on to where I can have this plug in, I'm almost confident when I say that its an airflow sensor but then again, I have no mechanics degree... Anyway you guys can tell me where to put this thing or what to do with it that way I can run the system the way it SHOULD be hooked up in stead of having all this mass confusion when people look under my hood and as the ever so popular question "what in the world is this"?

By the way heres a few pictures of what I'm talking about.

The first photo shows the main thing not that close but explains what Is going on basically
The second photo gets a little closer and shows what I've accomplished with my handy dandy rigmanship
The last one is just a real close shot of the plug that has been giving me the most grief
Thanks for what help I get you guys

That's teh Mass Airflow sensor, it's what your car uses to calculate how much fuel to give teh engine. it's a MUST HAVE. Unless you were to switch to teh GM mass air sensor with translator, but i don't know much about those. Some one on here can tell you about them as there's a lot of people using it

that, my friend is a mas air flow sensor and yes it is hooked up correctly... no dont run your car with out it.:nono:

ah you beat me to it.

Okay the next thing is. Can I eliminate the bulk of the MAFS to put a different filter on there or am I going to have to keep buying these big filters? And I've seen some cars with I guess an after market model wheres a good place to get one of them?
I figured not to run it without the plug, my gas mileage when down when I had it unhooked.
Much better now :)

Unfortunatly you have to have one. If you want to replace it to use a smaller filter you can get the gm mas with the gm mas translator. OR you can always get a standalone ecu like the aem and you want need the maf but im not sure what all that requires.

I also have a N/T and the way you have it "Rigged in there" is proper and you should be getting the most flow you can that way

from what it sounds everyone has done a pretty good job of helping you. Yes as you have already found out that is your mass air sensor and is quite necassary. I noticed that a lot of these guys have been referring you to a mass air translator, but i wanted to let you know there is another option that would be preffered if you wanted to make some serious power upgrades. Look into a wideband sensor, you can find plenty of different Engine Managment Systems in the section TECH, but in case you weren't diggin the maf translator its another option. It basically lets you run any filter or intake option you'd like, you just have to tune for it.

Thanks a ton everybody I appreciate the help, I knew it was the MAF but I was just wondering if maybe there was another one I could put one on there to reduce the big bulky section that I had to cut off of the old tube and possibly up my HP .... I guess I'll have to wait till I get a GSX...
tsk tsk tsk.
