My timing marks are all lined up until I tension the belt, the crank and oil pulley the move CW. Do I need to adjust for this a tooth ccw or hold those pulleys while putting tension on? Cams stay fine.

Did you follow the directions on the VFAQ.com page? It's a little tricky till you get the hang of it. I usually put a ratchet on the crank to hold it ( the weight of a 1/2 drive ratchet seems to hold mine) then i use a box wrench to hold teh intake and ex cam gears in place while wrapping the belt onto them.

Just go step by step on teh vfaq page, once you're done.. pull the plugs and rotate teh motor 6 times to make sure everything re-aligns.. BUt DON'T try and compensate by moving something a tooth forward or back

Yup, had 3 of the belt install walkthroughs up and had been reviewing for a few days. If I try to hold the cams in place the crank is off, hold the crank the cams are off. I left the 1/2 drive in the crank but I still had the same trouble. The one walkthrough suggests offsetting the exhaust cam clockwise some to account for the movement. I'll review them again tonight and give it another try tomorrow. Out of time for today. Only thing I can think of is that my tensioner pin is not coming loose so I'll have to put the torque wrench on to get the right tension.

Thanks!

Actually its been a known method to rotate the exhaust cam a tooth CCW in order to offset the movement clockwise a tooth.

There are plenty of articles in here that you can read through.

Personally, I have never had to rotate a cam gear to compensate for any movement while tensioning the belt.

That's the great thing about forums, you can always learn something you didn't know an hour ago. Personally i've never had any trouble getting the marks lined up, but the CCW tooth on the Exh cam makes sense when i picture the system tensioning up.
