Newmarket,
I have a problem with my 1997 Talon TSI AWD. My 2nd synchro is starting to go, and I have hard shifting into 2nd. I definetly have to swap the tranny, or get a rebuilt. I was thinking to get a rebuilt from Shepracing, but because of financial problems, I cannot afford to get it, and let someone else do it, and pay for labour. I have never done any work on this car myself, except change brakes, fluids, stuff like that. I was wondering how hard it would be for me to take out the tranny, and put a new rebuilt one in. anyone can tell me? also any articles that may help me along the way or hints, would be useful? Also what tools I would need, things like that? I will replace the clutch, clutch cable as well, anything else I should look at while I am at it?

Thanks guys.

If you have never done it before make sure you have a friend there to help. The transmission can get a little heavy if its a first time lining everything up. If you are doing the clutch also you may need an impact gun to get the flywheel loose. If your mechanically inclined this is something that you can do in your driveway.

I agree however even veterians mechanics have had troubles with the awd use the VFAQ and you should be ok takes us about 1hr 45 min round trip in and out.

well today was my 3rd time that i pulled out tranny, for new clutch and flywheel ,so to unbolt everything (to make clearance to tranny) and tranny it self it took me 25 mins LOL lets say half an hour, and 2nd time when i put it on,it took me an hour, maybe a lilbit less than that.(all the work i was doing myself in a backyard :D

Before you swap/rebuild, make sure its your trans and not a clutch disengagement problem. Could be bad master/slave cylinder, worn fork/ball, etc. Search around, there's tons of info on all this.

If you end up pulling the trans:

Put all the nuts/bolts in baggies and label them. It is ESSENTIAL that you bolt up the trans properly when you're done. When you replace the clutch, buy a properly stepped flywheel to go with it, or get yours resurfaced by a reputable shop. Be sure you don't put weight on the input shaft when pulling off or re-installing the transmission. Don't let it hang by 1 or 2 bolts either, you can crack the bell housing. Don't lose the 2 pins that go between the engine and trans. Replace your fulcrum arm (fork) and pivot ball. Be sure to properly bleed the clutch hydraulics when you're done.

Read this all the way through...twice.

Do yourself a favor, buy a CD of the factory service manual, or at the VERY least, get Haynes or Chiltons. If you're planning on doing your own work you need this stuff.

Good luck!
