Hypothetically say we took the turbo out of a DSM and routed the intake straight to the IC and exhaust manifold straight to the downpipe and all that other stuff. Would the car be able to run at all? I only ask because I had a dream/nightmare a few nights ago where my car wasn't going past 60 mph and I concluded my turbo is gone. Just for kicks, in the end it turned out I somehow shifted it from D to 2nd gear on the auto.

It should run just fine. If you were to do it you would have to block the turbo oil feed and drain back lines and rerought the turbo cooler lines and also but a bung in the down pipe for a O2 sensor. That is all in thorey of corse.
ROFL

The ECU is programmed to run with the turbo though. I cant imagine it running well without a bit more work.

It would run super rich because it no longer has the extra airflow from the turbo. But it would get you to where you neede to go in order to park it until you could put on another turbo.

It would not run rich because the a/f mixture is based on airflow going through the mas. If no turbo is there, it would run just as it is supposed to when no boost is present. The fuel pressure wouldnt rise either because that is boost dependent.

The car would run as good as any other 8.5:1 n/t car. As long as the intake is still pulling through the mas and there are no exhaust leaks before the o2 sensor, The car would run as normal, without boost.

I disagree. The MAS reads the air being "sucked in" by the turbo. The mas is gonna read less air, therefore compensate the a/f ratio accordingly. Atleast seems like this is how it would work. A good example is being able to drive your car with the gm 3" and translator with a boost leak before the mas. It would still run and drive far enough to get the car fixed because the maf only reads air passed through, no matter the psi. The 8.5 comp. ratio w/o a turbo would yield terrible performance results I would think. Just my theories though. DSM WISEMEN? D##Mn, seconds too slow....

I ran my car at a track with a 3" gm maf/translator and I completely blew off the I/C outlet pipe. I stayed on the gas to see what would happen, it ran fine down the track just as if it was the GS I originally bought. It was a little more gutless (7.8:1 turbo engine) but it ran. It even had that ricer non turbo sound.

I killed my 14B and it was burning oil bad above 2psi, and was waiting for a paycheck to get a 16G. So What I did was take off the wastegate actuator and rigged up a metal coat hanger from the wastegate arm to the dipstick tube to hold the wastegate open and ran on 0 boost for a week. That sucked major, 7.9:1 compression + no boost = :sosad:

The WG flapper came unhooked from the actuator on my 14b and the car ran great without boost. In addition to that I've had a valve stuck in the turbine with 0 boost, car also ran great. Hell, even my speed density based turbo minivan ran well without a turbo for the few seconds I fired it up, sounded mean as hell too...

What the OP is proposing to do is a lot of work compared to getting a new turbo though.

Interesting. I figured it could still run fine but it would run like a N/T. I don't know where I concluded that the car not going past 60 mph had to be a blown turbo. Me and my dreams :p
