Well I was driving to work on sunday and all of the sudden my car starts making a knocking sound that slowly starts getting louder. I was on the highway so i had to get off. when i got off the light knock sounds like loud clunking sound. I turn the car off as soon as i can and right after that coolant starts pooring from the motor WTF . So i have the car towed to my apartment that night and pull the head the car had been leaking oil from the head gasket for a while but i have been unable to get anything done about it. So i guess the question I have is, is that a normal sound for blowing the head gasket? I also drained the oil and found metal in there. This is my third motor in this car so i know the sound of a spun bearing and broken piston rings but this sound was unlike either of those. I got the head checked to see if it needed to be machined and the shop said the head was fine just clean up the block and the surface of the head and ill be good to go. So tomorrow starts the put it back to together process. I will be using arp head studs so i need to know the torque specs to put the head and intake manifold and all that stuff back. this is my first head job but overall i think it went rather well for doing it myself.:thumb:

It look worse than a blown head gasket. A blown head gasket will cause bogging down, oil in coolant or coolant in oil, no vacuum, etc...

It seems that something may have gone wrong with your internals i.e. valves, rods, etc... since you found shredded metal the oil.

yeah i was think that may be the case but it was slowly loosing compression and i could feel it going down hill from there. Also my friend told me if you blow a head gasket you will hear all kinds of noise and could cause the metal in the oil..

It definitely is more than just a head gasket -- metal shavings don't come out of nowhere.

You should inspect the oil pickup for metal shavings, then pull the main caps and inspect the main bearings, then pull the rod caps and do the same. Either way, the motor will need to come out and get remachined; it is not in your best interest to just put new bearings and continue driving -- you will only have to pull it apart again when it fails in a very short amount of time. Have you already pulled the front cover and inspected the balance shafts and bearings? Check these too as it is common for the balance shaft bearings to wear out, then fail and the balance shafts would then be machining themselves into the block. Either way, it would be in your best interests to do plan on a COMPLETE block rebuild with new front cover/oil pump, pickup, piston check /new rings, rod check, new rod bolts, new main and rod bearings, etc.

motor 1 was factory 165k spun rod bearing

motor 2 this guy that builds motors on other cars including his dsm 500 miles aka 1 week
spun rod bearing

motor 3 much more reliable person built but due to problems with other shops 8 k or so.. spun rod bearing

the shop that put this last motor in did the timing wrong so it wouldn't even start when i got it back, then they didn't torque the head right so it leaked oil and i kept oil in the system so it wouldn't get low but guess it was not enough. So this time im thinking of just doing it myself What really sucks is that i was getting ready to do the head gasket in the next couple of days

wow man that sucks man sounds like u need to try somebody else....have u ever rebuilt a motor...i got a complete 6 bolt that at the machine shop right now im looking to sell when it gets done....if ## interested let me know
